The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has determined that each year, over 3,000 ineligible persons receive firearms through this default provision. The average time it takes for law enforcement to determine that illegal purchasers are ineligible to receive firearms is 25 days (Masters, 2015). Therefore, a two week waiting period should be required for anyone attempting to purchase a firearm. This additional time would allow more research and completed background checks to identify and reduce the number of prohibited people who are able to purchase firearms by default (Masters, 2015).
The rationale given for most modern gun control legislation is crime control. In order to understand it fully, we need to look at gun control laws at the state level and federal laws.
