The Best Gift Ever
I examined the fine metallic textures of it once again as it captivated me. It kept me pondering endlessly, and its uniqueness seemed to grow every time I glanced at it. It shone like an angel’s light as I fiddled with it about the sunlight that had already appeared before. What could be more valuable about it? I wondered again. Just moments before, I had found this on my desk. It was a gift from my mother. But as attractive as it was, it seemed that the thought behind it was the source of its beauty.

The day was passing by almost too quickly as I was enjoying the warm summer outdoors. But it was not just another day today, it was my birthday. Even though I sometimes do not think much about this day, a simple gift makes this day simply different from any other. I have always preferred something simple, whether giving or receiving a gift, simple always does it. I knew that I will be receiving something from my mother. Even if it wasn’t a new car topped with the world’s most expensive rims or James Bond’s Seiko watch, I would be fine with it. I don’t ask for much, I can appreciate whatever I get.

When I came home in the afternoon, lying on my desk was a white box no more than three inches in length and width decorated with a very light emboss of abstract design. I opened it carefully and discovered a beautiful metal keychain positioned almost perfectly among the padding that prevented it from damage. The four corners that were slightly etched across in a curvy manner revealed to be the most reflective part that ran throughout the other side. My fingers traced across the finest engraving of Edwardian-script that spelt my name. I took the keychain into my own hands and studied it while it reflected the alluring sunlight that found its way through the windows.

Thinking about this gift that my mother had given me invited a warm and heartfelt feeling that seemed to radiate throughout my entire body. The simple but extravagant design of this gift had more to offer

The image of you is still painted in my mind like a canvas painting hung in an art gallery. You bought so much joy to me that day and I will always remember you because of this. Not to mention that you always lived up to your promise of coming to see me, no matter the circumstances. The sound of your voice during every visit was enough to bring a smile to my face and to cheer me up in a circumstance which this would not have been possible…

The dewdrops on the grass glistened in the morning light. A slight breeze rustles the branches of the trees. The green hill against the baby blue sky was a splendor: the scene was pure bliss. Amidst that perfect scene, a boy sits by the fence, his gray uniform making him protrude from the scene. He stares off into the distance, contemplating. He could, for one, run off and escape. Or he could stay and endure the pain. He feels the breeze pick up, but with it, something foreign came along with it: a paper. This draws his interest – he stands up to observe the paper. Little did he know, this would be something that will change his life.…

As I’m walking on the side walk looking at this calm and peaceful neighborhood I’m falling in love with all the beautiful trees and the serenity of the environment. As I come closer to the Menil I notice how tall it is for a one story building. It’s a simple building but the treasures inside awaits my curious eyes and soul of the arts. I notice the brass inlays and the unique designs upon the green lawn, I so wished there was water to fill it to get another prospective on the art but I continue on my way in.…

Hardy’s poem on the surface is about a seemingly loving yet dense husband who gives his wife a handmade workbox as a gift, which he has crafted out of the remnants of a coffin he has just completed. The wife happily accepts the gift which she believes is given out of love, but is shocked and frightened when she learns of its origin. Most would be shocked but not necessarily frightened to learn that a gift was made of materials of a coffin, but in this poem it is not the raw materials which the gift is made of that shocks and frightens the wife but rather the coffin’s owner (Hardy line 1-10).…

I found a new love for old books and the mysteries they hold. The first place I visit in an antique store is the books section. The smell and feel of an old book can transport you to another time and place. Other books from that time, from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll to Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen to Frankenstein by Mary Shelley to 20,000 lieges under the Sea by Jules Verne, have a special magic to them. They have a unique way of allowing you to walk through their worlds with the characters. There is nothing better than curling up with an old book and losing yourself in it.…

The courtyard boasted wildly with the sounds of laughter and exchanged money. A sight to see indeed, in fact a sight almost too large for a even grown adult to process. Of course, George was no grown man, so at every call of a marketer beckoned him to approach. One would be amazed at the things one can find at a flea market, let alone a New York flea market. Today, George’s parents had thought to take advantage of the weather, for it was turning toward the summer ahead, making it prime for a day's stroll through the bustling rows of merchants. Hours they spent, gawking at pieces from all over the world; a cabinet from Germany, a door from Rome, it was truly a wonder to behold. But then the day was done, merchants packing up shop, time to leave this magical place. George could not help but to notice a flash in the corner of his eye. A flash as bright as lightning, he would later claim, in which he looked over and saw it. An ornate mirror hung from a stand with the seller underneath, packing up the shop for the night. It was simply astounding. From the ellipsing frame delicately shaped into waves and fleurs coated in a silver blanket to the sheer elegance that radiated from it, George felt that he simply must have it. The merchant pleaded that it was not for sale, that it held something that no one wanted. But stubborn George was and his parents paid…

The room was larger than his first impression standing in the doorway. A large dark desk dominated the center, and behind it a tall opaque window in the wall. In front of the desk was a high-backed blue chair and beside it a small table. The door closed with a slight hiss and he was alone. He noticed the surface of the desk was contoured and more the shape of a console. A dull black, smooth surfaced mass. He sat down in the chair and…

A wooden folding table missing several chunks of surfacing bore my name. Over it I spread an old blue sheet - later in my career (i.e. the next year) I would buy a new black sheet, which appeared to me more professional. I set up the old picture frame my dad and I had converted into my first display. On green wire hooks I placed thirty cards bearing my jewelry. True to the spirit of Rubriataki I had given each piece a unique name: Sleeping Beauty, because the vine pattern reminded me of the fairy tale, Chagall, after the famous artist, and Jester Checks, a checkerboard necklace of red and yellow that, because it was so unappealing, I’ve never managed to sell. At that fair I sold five pieces and was introduced to a woman from a neighboring town who invited me to participate in a much larger holiday show that…

When I stumbled across this gleaming beauty, I began to wonder “why coins?” An interest in any normal hobby was too easily managed. Suddenly it hit me; I knew this would be it. The thirst for water to a lost soul at sea was little comparison to the nature of this hidden treasure. I wanted to understand the need for a coin. The unanswered “Why?” became a burden tortuously clawing at my thoughts. What would be the point to collecting? Why do people collect them? I then raced to the nearest coin shop begging for an explanation to the magnificent gleaming wonder.…

He was on the porch when the car came to a crunching halt on the graveled driveway. He shook our hands solemnly, then ushered us into the living room. In the half-light, everything in the room glowed, shimmered or shone. The old ferruginous narra floor glowed. The pier glass coruscated. The bentwood furniture from the house in Jaen looked as if they had been burnished. In a corner, surrounded by bookcases, a black Steinway piano sparkled like glass.…

A purple dress peeks through the overstuffed suitcase. It was packed with everlasting memories of me and her. I tugged on my pink, plastic covered suitcase and lugged it down the seemingly endless stairs. I hand it to my dad, whose unshaven, rough face seemed tired and almost lifeless. He put mine and my mother's luggage into the car’s trunk. Today was a special day, nothing in the manner of a birthday or a party, it wasn’t happy or festive, but today was a special day. I got in the car which was filled with glumness that hung in the air like an unpleasant air freshener. Everyone felt devastated and talking suddenly became more painful each time we tried. After my dad got the call about her death, no one in my family functioned normally, except for my sister of course, who never had the chance to meet the woman, for we left India before my sister was born.…
