Chandler writes, “I was wearing my powder-blue suit, with dark blue shirt, tie and display handkerchief, black brogues, black wool socks with dark blue clocks on them. I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn’t care who knew it.” Marlowe dresses up in nice clean clothes everywhere he goes to show people that he means business and always completes the job. Chandler says that Marlowe does not care if anyone knew he was clean and dressed properly. The author writes, “I was everything the well-dressed private detective ought to be.
