“The Birth of General Motors” William Durant and Charles Mott were two key figures in the founding of General Motors in 1908. General Motors Company, known as GM, is an American multinational automotive corporation headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, and among the world’s largest automakers by vehicle unit sales, employing 202,000 people and doing business in some 157 countries.
Way back in the 1900’s there was limited supply of automobiles, in fact there were only about 8,000 automobiles in America according to GM’s website. In 1904 Durant was approached by Buick to help guild the fledgling automaker. With Durant at the helm, Buick was soon making 8,800 cars a year, more than any other U.S. company. General Motors would not had even been thought of if it wasn’t for Durant, a well-known man in the manufacturing of Horse-drawn vehicles, who founded this great company in the early 19th century. General Motors was founded by a high school dropout, knowing little to nothing about automobiles. William Durant founded General Motors and was known for their horse drawn vehicles. Durant only had two thousand dollars of his own money, and immediately put that money into stocks and raised twelve million dollars in funds. With the funds Durant then brought Buick. General Motors was co-founded by a man named Charles Mott, who was at the time a major and a business man. The demand for automobiles grew in the 1920’s and as it did GM set the pace of production, design, and marketing innovation for others to follow (www.GM.com). General Motors philosophy and strategy “A car for every purse and purpose,” along with a series of landmark innovations changed the automobile itself (Wikipedia.com 2012). A few facts that I discovered from General Motors website: * 1910: Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac are incorporated into GM. * 1911: Electric self-starter first appears on a Cadillac. * 1953: Air conditioning
