The Birthmark Vs The Birthmark
All the six readings have something in common, which is the search for perfection, how humans can create perfection, and all its downfalls and benefits. These stories tell a lesson on why everyone should be comfortable in their own skin rather than hurting themselves and others around them. There is no such thing as a perfect human being, society just sets expectations, because they know the people will follow blindly. Truly if you are comfortable in your own skin it will shine in your personality and attract the right people.

It shows us the cruel things we do to ourselves just to fit into society. If we don’t look as the society pleases then kids get bullied just like Georgiana in The Birthmark. She is one of the most beautiful women

When Josie looks at her reflection at the start of chapter 13 (p. 119) she said, “The reflection in the mirror was exceptional. I could have been a model for Hot Pants. Except that when I finally put my glasses on, reality set in.” This reminds me of what I see through the media. It shows girls who are perfectly beautiful, but the media portrays them to be “fat” or “ugly”. The media has set the trend that all girls should look and act a certain way. I feel that this is wrong and should not be done. Girls should be left to be girls and not be judged by the way that they look.…

When examining an individual’s appearance, what are the first few characteristics that you identify? Is it their gender? How about their race, or social class? As a society we immediately categorize each other; we classify every aspect of our personalities and presentations. If a certain characteristic of an individual seems to deviate from the social ‘norm’, we cast that individual off and claim them to be different from us. But who are we, and where has our society received these notions of right and wrong? It is important to note that reality is completely relative and totally depends on the culture and the time period. Reality is also fluid and ever changing. It continues to evolve as society either agrees or disagrees on what is acceptable. Today, the media plays a vital role in portraying who and what members of our society should be. Disney has been around for generations and continues to be a dominant media conglomerate that aids in gender socialization of our youth while also painting a vivid…

As I said before that the others wanted to give a message throughout the entire book to explain to people that we are all one of a kind and never try to be like someone else because there is only one of them and one of you. No one can do better than the next person because we all have something different to offer and we only improve ourselves more when we are just ourselves. Basically no one is like the other so why try to be better at what someone does better when all they’re doing is being their own being. Fear is also mentioned in this book and they tackle this throughout the book as well saying that fear is seen as a negative feature of people, but should really be used as an “engine starter.” That is mostly why this book inspires me not just entertains me.…

Women are taught to have this perfect body and view themselves as a sexual object and men are taught to be in power and control women. The film stated that teenagers spend a lot of time watching movies, watching T.V, hearing music, reading magazines, constantly on social media and this equals to about 10 hours a day learning information about how a women or men need to be in order to be accepted by society. People learn a lot from social media and when social media is constantly marketing women appearance or men status, it causes people to feel frustrated about themselves.…

However, not all of our teenagers are okay with it nor accepting it, even though the media did polish the girls to care only about the way she look, some of our girls that were shown in the trailer, still care about the brain. These girls are asking people around them to care about that as well. They also talked about how girls in their young age would go the restroom to put make up on when she is in high school suppose to be learning. Not only girls fell under what media is promoting, guys also fell under it. They young man who said that people around hi are pushing him to be “hyper muscular” in this young age, just because of what the media promote. The advertisement that shows men have to be in power and in control, with all the sexually offence images to women. That somehow narrowed the women role in the society; women stopped making any progress according to the percent study that was shown in the trailer. The same level of effectiveness of narrowing that is being applied on our teenagers and adults by media instead it can be motivation to our society. Just like Geena Davis (actor) mentioned how young girls were motivated because of her…

Social sciences have often dealt with the relationship between a person’s body figure and his or her self-image. In this respect, the sociologist Carolina González Laurino (2008: 23) claims that “la construcción social de la identidad se encuentra en estrecha relación con la auto-percepción del cuerpo.” However, the image an individual has of his or her own figure may be affected by other people’s perception. In the case of “The Birthmark,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne and “Hands,” by Sherwood Anderson, the body plays a central role because it determines the characters’ identities and the way they interact with others. It is the purpose of this essay to explore the ways in which…

It shows that women don’t have to be a housewife or have to have a secretary job. It shows that women can do way more than what society has determined for our gender. Since we live in America we all know how society has expectations on what type of jobs women should have and what their hobbies should be, and same goes for men. Society expects women to stay at home, keep the house clean, care for the kids, and make the food. We think that because back in the forties and fifties before it was really normal for women to work, that’s what they did. So, though that society has had gender expectations on what women and men do. That’s why the picture and the article about the Lauren Holtkamp is so powerful. This picture and article shows that women can do jobs that society thought that were only for…
