The Black Cat Symbolism Essay
Edgar Allan Poe puts a lot of thought and detail into his stories. It is amazing how uses his imagination to transport the readers to a different dimension where he can show his readers how he sees the world. Authors use literary devices to keep the readers interested because if there wasn’t any literary devices in a story then the story would be dull and tasteless. In the story he turns from an animal lover to a murder. He committed a terrible crime due to his alcoholism. In the short story “The Black Cat,” Edgar Allan Poe use symbolism and Point of View to convey the readers that what he did was not his fault it was “ The Cat.”
The first literary element that the author uses to convey the theme is when the readers realized how “alcohol” symbolizes the narrator’s problems, abusing his wife and pets all started with his uncontrollable drinking The narrator feels that alcohol is helping him resolve his problems, relieving him of the pain he’s caused people also the people he loved but in the end it just caused him more problems.     The problems of alcoholism and insanity are recurring themes in Poe’s literary works. One can say that “The Black Cat,” one of Poe’s short stories, portrays much of the author’s own views on his substance abuse problems and mental illness. The unnamed narrator from “The Black Cat,” struggles with his addiction to alcohol and his hatred for two cats become prevailing. The narrator states, however, that he was never like this before he loved animals, “never was so happy as when feeding and caressing them.” (Poe, 3). The narrator takes on a cat and cares for it, however, as his drinking problem progressed, he states, “I grew day by day more moody… my disease grew upon me.” (Poe, 4). After a night out drinking, he decides to cut out one of the cat’s eyes and ultimately, kills the cat. Later, another cat strangely identical to the first cat with one eye comes around and as the narrator tries to kill the second cat he ends up killing his wife instead. He buries the body of his wife and the second cat behind a wall and police later hear the cat calling out from inside the wall. In relation to Poe’s life, Poe was known to love cats and had a female cat named Catterina (Mercier). The killing of the first cat relates to Poe’s own destruction of the things he loved and desired due to alcoholism. He lost his job in 1837 due to his drinking and feuding with other editors (Edgar Allan Poe, Encyclo.) The killing of an innocent wife can closely relate to Poe’s views of women in his own life, through the deaths of both his mother figures and then eventually his wife. Without theses story elements Poe’s tale would not be what it has come to be. Metaphors are used to help people understand something by comparing it to something else that is more understandable, “He had the eye of a vulture -a pale blue eye, with a film over it.” This metaphor shows how the narrator saw the eye. He didn’t just see it as any other eye; he saw it as more. He thought of it as a piercing eye from a vulture. In the tale the narrator tells the reader that the reason he wants to kill the old man is because of the old man’s eye. This metaphor helps the reader understand truly how much the narrator didn’t like the old man’s eye. The reader starts to understand the narrator more and more and can now begin to truly understand the narrator’s insanity. In addition to metaphors there are similes. Similes are similar to metaphors because they are also used to compare and contrast objects or ideas. They are formed when words are put together that almost create an image in your mind.
