The Bodoni Typeface The Bodoni typeface represents the Modern typeface family, which is noted for being the first movement toward visual expression in type. By discovering information about who created this typeface, the inspiration behind the design, the visual aspects, and the varied uses of it since its creation, a greater understanding of the Modern Typeface, Bodoni, can be reached. The Bodoni typeface first appeared around 1790, although it was created in 1788, by an Italian printer named Giambattista Bodoni . Bodoni was the fourth son born to a master printer in Northern Italy. He left home at a young age, travelling to Rome. There, he began an apprenticeship at the press of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, which was associated with the Roman Catholic Church .
Bodoni became known for his excellent craftsmanship, and epic attention to detail. When Duke Ferdinand of Parma (who was a noted patron of the Arts) sought to establish premier royalty press, he wanted to ensure that he could provide the highest possible quality of printing for the aristocrats . He asked Bodoni to assume management of the Royal Press (Stamperia Reale), in 1768. There, he printed materials for court use, as well as produced Italian, Greek, and Latin books. As he gained notoriety for his craft, the Duke allowed him an even larger press, and the independence to take on additional projects .
His work was regal, and sophisticated. The typography that Bodoni was able to produce is regarded, even today, as some of the most structured, and refined printing that has ever been produced. He commonly printed books, pamphlets, and royal announcements known for their beauty, and typographical value.
