The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
On August 6th, 1945 the US dropped a bomb on Hiroshima (nicknamed little boy and weighed nearly 8000lbs. This was the first time man had used a nuclear weapon against his fellow man. It was delivered by a US B29 nicknamed Enola Gay. The bomb contained Uranium 235, and exploded about 580m above the ground. Three days later on August 9th the US dropped a second bigger atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki (nicknamed Fatman). It was delivered by a B29 nicknamed Bockscar. It weighed nearly 9000lbs. The causes for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were: the bombing of Pearl harbor, to prevent Operation Downfall, and to prevent the war from going on any longer. On December 7th, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor (Overview of the Pearl Harbor Attack, 7th December 1941). It resulted in twenty one of the US Pacific Fleets to be sunk or damaged. It caused 2403 American deaths including 68 civilians. In addition 1178 military and civilians were wounded. In the end twenty nine planes, less than 10 percent of the Japanese attacking force failed to return. The bombing of Pearl Harbor would cause the planned invasion of the Japanese mainland called Operation Downfall. Operation Downfall was a planned invasion of the Japanese mainland, but was delayed because of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and canceled after the Japanese surrendered (World War 2 in the Pacific Operation Downfall). In Operation Downfall the US was to invade Southern Kyushu which would provide a large air base and air force within range of Tokyo. Then on March 1st 1946 the US was planned to invade Central Honshu, and then Tokyo. It was to be complete within a year of the end of the war in Europe. It would relate to the third and final cause, which is to prevent the war from going on any longer. The US wanted to prevent the war from continuing, because it would have resulted in mass causalities on both sides (Japanese and United States) such as an estimated number approaching about half a million people and more (John Gillard). The effects of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were that it killed an estimated combined 220,000 people (The bombing of Hiroshima killed an estimated140, 000 and the bombing of Nagasaki killed an estimated 80,000), (BBC News). It ended up killing Allied powers, Koreans, Chinese laborers, and Malaya students on scholarships. In addition it killed an estimated 3200 Japanese American citizens. Also many died from radiation sickness and it is even affecting unborn children by giving them cancer and stunted growth. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was one of the main reasons why the Japanese surrendered to the allies on August 14th 1945. There were many people who didn’t agree with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki such as Albert Einstein, Leo Szilard, and Peter Kuznick, but the US had to bomb those cities because of these causes: the bombing of pearl harbor, to prevent Operation Downfall, and to prevent the war from going on any longer. There is one question on everybody’s mind what would have happened if we didn’t bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

The first part of the invasion was code named Olympic, in late October 1945 where over 800,000 Allied soldiers would go to Kyushu which was going to be defended by 350,000 Japanese soldiers and over 1,000 kamikaze planes(Harry S Truman’s Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb). To understand the reasons behind this attack one has to go back to the time after World War 1 to the Versailles’s Peace Conference, where the Allied Powers were to sort out the Wreckage after the war. In addition to that the US indicated special interest in founding the League of Nations,an organization to solve future world problems, however the US didn´t join it in the end, to obtain the freedom to deal with problems in their own way. The attack on Pearl Harbor was an effort by the Japanese government to deal a decisive blow to the U.S in order that the Japanese could invade the Southern Pacific Islands and Australia, to capture and have access to the materials they needed to continue to power their war efforts, because with our fleet destroyed in that region, it would have cleared the way for them to get what they…

The U.S. and Japan had actually been in diplomatic talks at the time of the attack. They were successful in catching the Americans with most of the Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor. They made the mistake of awakening a sleeping giant. Here is more input: Japan invaded mainland China (they already had Manchuria, the north east part of China)in 1936. This brought about much tension between the U.S. and Japan, as the Americans were allies of the Chinese. The U.S. demanded that Japan withdraw from China and Indochina (but would have settled for a token withdrawal and a promise not to take more territory). General Hideki set November 29 as the last day on which Japan would accept a settlement without war. His deadline, which was kept secret, meant that war was going to happen. So, because America's and Japan's terms collided, so did their expectations therefore causing Japan to react. Japan wanted to become self-sufficient in resources such as coal, rice, and rubber. The pacific ocean was full of these, but unfortunately the U.S. was there as well. For many years before Pearl Harbor, the US had been placing trade embargoes on Japan. They limited their trading with the Japanese, and persuaded other countries not to trade with them. This boycotting…

The year was 1945, and the war was winding down. The US was working on rooting out Japan and ending the war. Iwo Jima, a small island about 650 miles away from Tokyo on Japanese soil, was needed by the US forces to end the war. Both countries were determined to fight long and hard for the island.…

There were a series of events that lead to the decision to drop the first atomic bomb on Japan which included: Pearl Harbor, Battle of Midway, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The first event that led to the decision to bomb Japan was driven by retribution for the Japanese bomb on Pearl Harbor that killed thousands and destroyed the majority of military resources located in the area. The second event that led to Truman’s ruling was, the Battle of Midway, this battle signaled that without interference Emperor Hirohito would not falter with his goal of conquering Asia. The next event that led to the decision to drop the bomb was the battle at Iwo Jima, even though the Japanese knew that they were eventually going to lose to the U.S their strong sense of…

The bombings took place on August 6th, 1945 they had different locations where they might drop the bombs, it all depended on whether the target had clear weather.
