The Book Of Psalm 23
In the book of Psalm there are several passages I have found to be encouraging, consequently, there is not just one I can call my favorite. The Psalm I have chosen to write about is Psalm 23. This was one of the very first verses I remember memorizing as a child in Sunday School. There were passages my Great Aunt and I would read together as she taught me about the Lord at a young age. She was like a mother to me when I was younger, reading through the book of Psalm reminded me of several of our adventures. This passage explains the confidence David had in the Lord to see him through any challenge life may bring him (Deffinbaugh, 2004).     Men’s repeated abandonment of women in Song of Solomon shows that the novel’s female characters suffer a double burden. Not only are women oppressed by racism, but they must also pay the price for men’s freedom. Guitar tells Milkman that black men are the unacknowledged workhorses of humanity, but the novel’s events imply that black women more correctly fit this description. The scenes that describe women’s abandonment show that in the novel, men bear responsibility only for themselves, but women are responsible for themselves, their families, and their communities. For instance, after suffering through slavery, Solomon flew home to Africa without warning anyone of his departure. But his wife, Ryna, who was also a slave, was forced to remain in Virginia to raise her twenty-one children alone. Also, after Guitar’s father is killed in a factory accident, Guitar’s grandmother has to raise him and his siblings. Although she is elderly and ill, she supports her children financially, intellectually, and emotionally.…

    The epigraph of Toni Morrison’s novel Song of Solomon introduces the most important and central theme of the novel; flight. It reads “the fathers may soar/And the children may know their names”. The novel is focused on flight and how it affects those left behind; the driving force behind the story is an old tale about Milkman’s great grandfather Solomon flying back to Africa and leaving his wife Ryna behind with 20 children to tend to. Morrison links this tale across space and time to Milkman’s life three generations later. Milkman “flies” away to find out about his past and leaves behind his lover and cousin, Hagar. Throughout the novel, Morrison uses literal and figurative flight as a motif that can be interpreted as a vehicle for human escape; however, it also serves as the catalyst for emotional distress and feelings of abandonment.
