Although Hans and Rosa Hubermann have two children of their own that have already moved out, they agreed to take care of Liesel for the small portion of money would they receive. However, the Hubermann’s son Hans Junior is against people against Hitler, and one of those people are Hans Hubermann, therefore causing them to fight. Although Rosa Hubermann is known as the woman with an iron fist, she still affection for Liesel,
despite the fact that she hits Liesel with the use of wooden spoons.
Moving on, Liesel becomes friends with a neighborhood boy whose name was Rudy Steiner, who eventually falls in love with Liesel. Liesel’s foster father, Hans, is a warm and nice man who brings Liesel comfort that she needs desperately and helps her to learn to read, starting with a book Liesel took from the cemetery where her brother was buried. As Liesel starts writing letters to her mother, she realizes that in the end, her mother might be killed by the Nazi’s. Liesel is also noticed stealing a book from the burning by the mayor’s wife Ilsa Hermann. However, she later invites Liesel to read in her library, however Liesel realized and understood that it isn’t her home, therefore she leaves.
