The Book Thief
Death is the narrator of Liesel’s story in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. The Book Thief takes place during World War II on a little street in Germany. Zusak focuses on the events in Liesel Meminger’s life during the war. As she grows and the war continues on, Liesel is faced by forms of oppression. The forms of oppression in The Book Thief are shown through the setting, use of characters, and the theme.
The setting is one way Zusak introduced oppression to the reader. The set for this book takes place in the small town of Munich, Germany in the height of the war. This is the last place you’d think to find the negative effect of the war, but the town struggles. One of which lead to the children to steal “The depressing pea

    ‘The Book Thief’, written by Markus Zusak is a novel set in Nazi Germany that demonstrates the hardships, danger and threatening experiences faced by the German families and Jews during that time in comparison to the rewards obtained due to such experiences and how they compare in relation to each other.
