What makes war so atrocious? While the bombs, people, and battles make up a fair portion of it, the most fundamental aspect is the way the war is told. In the play, “The Diary of Anne Frank”, and the novel, “The Book Thief”, the main characters, Anne and Liesel, face similar and different struggles during the most destructive war in history, World War II. However, their points of view of the war differ from each other in numerous ways.

At first, it is easy to see that Liesel and Anne grow up in very different environments, as Anne spends most of her teenage years hiding in an attic, while Liesel lives in a poor German neighborhood. Despite their poor living conditions, the places where the live affect their personality very differently. While Liesel tends to be more of a mischievous character, as she likes to steal books and scavenge food, Anne seems to be much more positive and loving. This could be due to their religion and beliefs as well. Anne is a Jew, therefore her being alive and fed is very fortunate, as many Jews are shipped off to concentration camps and tortured. This might leave her to be more positive, as she is grateful for being alive. On the other hand, Liesel tends to be more of a firebrand, as she is living in a safer neighborhood. This could lead her to push the boundaries more than others. Nevertheless, the environments the two characters are growing up in influences their character dramatically. To conclude, both books, “The Diary of Anne Frank” and “The Book Thief” demonstrate different points of view during World War II. As Anne Frank and Liesel Meminger face similar struggles internally and externally, their environments influence how they act significantly.
