expects the impossible”. Death saying that proves he isn’t evil ,and that’s where the irony can be observed.Although he’s being associated with evil, Death is actually more humane than some humans .The last thing death says in the novel is,“ I am haunted by humans.”. Again, a moment of irony, the being thought to haunt humans is haunted by humans. Unfortunately, many readers would agree with Death’s last comment. The dramatic irony created as a result of Death’s comments add to the dark and dreary tone of the novel.Death says,”As long as both she and Rudy lived, she would never kiss that miserable, filthy Saukerl”.
That’s what Liesel thought during chapter 9, but she soon had a change of heart….which was too late.Death announces Rudy’s death and says “He didn’t deserve to die the way he did”.Yes, the dramatic irony caused by Death’s comments managed to create more irony. When Rudy actually died he never actually kissed Liesel while he was alive, and she would regret that forever. Death as the narrator creates a dark and dreary tone in The Book Thief.Death is a very depressing and cynical person. He is more humane than some actual humans, which is sad. The Dramatic Irony highlights the suffering in the novel, and that helps create the Depressing mood within the novel .Humans will continue to haunt
Death.
