The Book Thief Rhetorical Analysis
A girl who steals books and a person who collects souls, it’s an unusual combination that works.The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a novel that follows a young girl named Liesel Meminger in Nazi Germany. The Narration is done by “Death”, a soul collecting immortal. Having Death as the narrator creates a dark and dreary tone. Death as a character is very cynical and depressing , he’s the exact opposite of what you would expect the grim reaper to be.The dramatic irony caused by death’s comments,enhances the understanding of the suffering of Liesel Meminger. Death as a narrator creates irony in the story, and as result it creates a depressing mood. Death can be observed as a very cynical person.He says in the first chapter that he needs a distraction to stay sane.That comment shows how mentally excruciating his job is, which explains why he’s so depressed.Later throughout the novel Death says, “They say that war is death’s best friend,but I must offer you a different point of view.To me,war is like the new boss who

Death saying that proves he isn’t evil ,and that’s where the irony can be observed.Although he’s being associated with evil, Death is actually more humane than some humans .The last thing death says in the novel is,“ I am haunted by humans.”. Again, a moment of irony, the being thought to haunt humans is haunted by humans. Unfortunately, many readers would agree with Death’s last comment. The dramatic irony created as a result of Death’s comments add to the dark and dreary tone of the novel.Death says,”As long as both she and Rudy lived, she would never kiss that miserable, filthy Saukerl”.
That’s what Liesel thought during chapter 9, but she soon had a change of heart….which was too late.Death announces Rudy’s death and says “He didn’t deserve to die the way he did”.Yes, the dramatic irony caused by Death’s comments managed to create more irony.When Rudy actually died he never actually kissed Liesel while he was alive, and she would regret that forever.
