The author’s purpose in writing the book: The author, Daniel James Brown, attended college in California, and became a non-fiction author. One of his books, The Boys in the Boat, grew very popular and contained a lot of historical significance. Daniel James Brown wanted to tell the story of Joe Rantz, and his life that mainly involved rowing. He also explained adversity that occurred during that time period and how the team was affected. Events during this time period included the Great Depression, and Hitler’s new-found Tyranny. During these circumstances, the author portrays to the reader the true meaning of grit, and shows you that if one works hard at something, anything is possible. Brown uses this information to both inform and entertain the reader of the true story of Rantz and his rowing team. But without these things, The Boys in the Boat, would lose its depth. Every little detail that seems unimportant plays a big role in the final product. Just like in a painting, every stroke or mark (sentence in the books case) makes the art (book) better.
