Further dissection allows us to break these three sections into the five main structures of the brain. The forebrain houses two of these main structures which include the telencephalon and diencephalon. The midbrain is where the structure known as the mesencephalon is located and the hindbrain, like the forebrain, houses the final two structures known as the metencephalon and myelencephalon (Pinel, 2007).
The myelencephalon, also known as the medulla, is located in the hindbrain. This structure acts as a signal carrier from the brain to other areas of the body (Pinel, 2007). The myelencephalon, or medulla, is responsible for reticular formation. Reticular formation is comprised of a complex network of white and grey matter which aids the smooth transition between descending and ascending signals of the central nervous system (Pinel, 2007). Reticular formation is believed to play a role in arousal but is also important to various other functions of the body including sleep, body movement, and muscle tone. In addition, reticular formation also plays a role in cardiac, circulatory and respiratory function. Because the involvement of the myelencephalon and its reticular formation involve such numerous functions and processes injury to this structure of the brain …show more content…
Like the myelencephalon the metencephalon also plays a role in reticular formation. Both of the structures located in the hindbrain create an area called the pons. The pons combined with the cerebellum composes the two main divisions of the metencephalon. The cerebellum is essential for proper sensory motor function and damage to this vital part of the metencephalon’s structure can impair motor function (Pinel,
