There are many primary motivations for moving to different colonies, and in this essay I will focus on the Middle Colonies. The Middle Colonies include New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware. Each of these colonies has their own special attractions about them, but one of the main reasons colonists came there was because they offered religious tolerance. Now I will break up each individual colony and the reason it was created and how it has affected it in modern times. New Jersey was created for religious freedom and it was a gift from the Duke of York. Many people of the time just wanted to worship in peace and wanted to worship in their own way, not how the king told them to. This led to many people coming here and increasing the population to make it a small, but dense area. Pennsylvania was formed for the Quakers to live in. They just wanted to escape from prosecution and all the hatred towards how they worshiped. Yes they worshiped in a different way than the Catholics, but that’s what made them unique. This affects the state now because it is still a very religious area. Pennsylvania was also a large port city. They had four shipyards and a large market on the waterfront.
