The Bridge By Joseph Stella
This art work by Joseph Stella captured my eye because of how colorful it is, almost making it mesmerizing with the different type of lines and shadows. Another reason I found this piece so interesting is that the canvas are very tall, making it seem like you’re look out of a large window. The Voice of the City of New York Interpreted: The Bridge (Brooklyn Bridge) was made with oil and tempera on canvas. It seem like Joseph Stella was trying to captured different parts the bridge and try to tell a story through the 5 canvases and it creates a uniqueness to it. “Italian immigrant Joseph Stella painted and O. Henry wrote their impressions of the essence, or voice, of this mighty city. New York dazzled and overwhelmed newcomers with its bright lights, …show more content…
The visual elements that this painting has is vertical, horizontal, sharped, curving, thick, thin, and irregular lines. It has an outline, geometric shapes, you can see triangles and circles, organic shapes, in the middle canvas it has deformed shapes that looks like shadows, and biomorphic shapes. Like the first canvas looks over the water and you see other bridge in the distance which shows it’s biomorphic because it’s based on natural objects.
The colors in the painting are half complementary. Which is a color schemes that emphasize two colors on the opposite of each other on the color wheel. For example and on the third canvas going from left to right, has the color red and green which are on the opposite ends of the color wheel. There is also analogous colors, where the colors and next to each other in the color wheel. On the second canvas it has blue and green which are next to each other on the color

The shapes in this painting are all organic because all of the objects in the piece have no true form. For instance, the clouds in the sky are ever changing and the water is constantly moving. The shapes appear to be voluminous because you can see the movement in them and therefore you know they have depth.…

In the excerpt, “Ship Breaker,” by Paolo Bacigalupi, the main theme shows that family doesn’t always mean blood. Sometimes, parents are never there for anyone then, there are friends who are there for when someone needs one. “The man was a drunk and a bastard, but still they were blood. They shared the same eyes, the same memories of his mother, the same food, the same liquor...…

In The Rock and the River, by Kekla Magoon, “all it takes for evil to exist is for good people to do nothing” is a prominent theme. An example of this is when Bucky had just been brutally beat and arrested by the police. The police did this in broad daylight in front of everyone including Maxie and Sam. “People on the street began going about their business again. The radio blasted, covering the silence of disbelief, of resignation.” (pg. 68). This quote demonstrates the theme because it shows that if the people watching the violence happen (aka the “good people”) do nothing, then the cop’s racism (aka the evil) would continue existing.…

The style of this painting is abstract with simplified and exaggerated aspects. The water and sailboats have all been simplified. The boats that are closer to the front of the painting have been exaggerated more than the others in the distance. There are many horizontal lines within the painting created with the hard, exaggerated brush strokes in the water.…

The first thing to note is the overall composition of the painting. First and foremost it is a landscape painting. The colors are very monochrome; the space is stretched to reveal a depth to the painting that the eye cannot capture; and there is stillness to the art that embraces nature and serenity of life. In the right-hand corner of the painting there is calligraphy. The calligraphy lacks the precision, but is very clear in its form, much like the depiction within the painting itself.…

There were grays and blues that appeared in the sky, river, and bridge. The people on the bottom of the painting were also dark grays, black, and dusty browns. One of the most obvious shapes in the painting is the rectangular shape which is the bridge. There are also vertical and horizontal lines that show the scale of the bridge which appears to be exaggerated. It looks massive at the right side and then on the opposite bank it seems to plunge into the burning blaze.…

When it comes to the color, many artists avoid using bright colors in fear of making a painting too overwhelming, but Elizabeth Murray shows that bright colors, if chosen well, may actually supplement each other. In “Back on Earth” she uses analogous colors – green, blue-green and blue to achieve unity through color. What helps to bring the work…

“Sparrow” by Norman MacCaig has a strong social issue of the class system and how the classes differ. MacCaig talks about the issue of the class system in relation to survival of to fittest. The poem itself talks about birds like sparrows and other birds in general, which are metaphors for people. Word choice, sentence structure and enjambment were strong in improving my understanding of the social issue of the class system.…

The lines in this work of art are of a large variety. On the right side of the painting a lot of the objects are horizontal. The woman though is sitting up vertically, along with the flame. There are a few diagonal lines also, for example; the position of the woman’s head, one of her legs, and her arm resting on the skull. Everything in this painting is realistic and the shapes are organic. The texture in this painting is two-dimensional. Almost all of the objects seem to be smooth, for example; the books, the wall, the table, the woman’s skin and dress, and so on. Warm colors are used in this painting. The value in this shows the lightest point being the center and from that going outward, it gets darker.…

They look like rectangles or squares, depending on the size, and have a half circle on top, an arch. In this piece of artwork the colors are what attracted my attention. There are bright, dark, warm, cool, and muted colors mixed in. The bright colors in this piece of artwork almost show a light shining down on them. In the painting it shows that it is a nice day with a couple clouds in the sky.…

In this photograph I believe the figure is the large body of water casting a shadow of the objects surrounding it. These objects are considered the ground, or the surrounding visual information the figure stands out from. The mountains and trees in the photo would be considered positive shapes, because they are perceived as figures. These objects would also be considered organic shapes because they are objects that are irregular and are the living forms of nature. Another element of art I find in this photograph is texture. Our eyes when looking at this perceive a rough, bumpy and coarse surface on the rocks. The body of water in the photo looks very smooth. Everything about the texture we see makes us want to feel the real texture of what we…
