The Bridge: Synopsis
In 1970, Antonello is 22 years old and recently married. He has been working on the Westgate Bridge for almost 2 years and loves his job. Like many of his workmates, Antonello is proud of the bridge. He believes it is going to be more spectacular than the Sydney Harbour Bridge, that it is going to bring the city together and that they, the bridge builders, will be remembered for years to come. On the 15th October 1970 the Westgate Bridge collapses during construction and thirty-five men are killed.
In 2009, Jo is a 18 year old high school student. She goes to a friend’s birthday party with her best friend Ashleigh (Antonello’s granddaughter). They drink too much and on the way home, the car spins out of control and hits an embankment under the Westgate Bridge. Ashleigh dies on impact and Jo is charged with culpable driving.
Sarah is a 22 year old law student in 1995, when her old school friend Ada, jumps off the Westgate Bridge. Though she has been witness to Ada’s anxieties, to her struggle with depression for many years, her friend’s death has a lasting impact. The Brooklyn Bridge was a feat of modern technology. Its construction spanned from 1869 to 1883, or fifteen years over the lives of its three creators. The first, who was also the designer, was John Augustus Roebling. Many thought it impossible for his plan to succeed, as most other suspension bridges had failed under certain circumstances, but he was determined to prove them wrong. In 1867 his plan was approved by New York legislators and just two years later construction began. Throughout the years of construction, many died, including Roebling himself. After his passing, Roebling’s son, Washington A. Roebling, took his place as chief engineer. For most of the time afterwards, he worked well in this place, but after getting what was called…

Bridges are something that have always fascinated me. In my picture you can see I have the Julien Dubuque Bridge in the background. This bridge is a two lane bridge, it has been debated through the past years on if this bridge will be altered in the future. I think it would be a very interesting lesson for the students to look at adding lanes on the bridge. They could choose to expand the bridge into four lanes, build a second two-lane bridge, or tear down the current bridge and replace with a four-lane. During this project students would need to keep in mind that the Julien Dubuque Bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They would also have to factor in construction time and possible road detours to decide what would…

    River as Bridge

At the beginning of the new millennium urban populations outnumbered that of rural populations for the first time in history. Urban areas have long had connotations of being harmful to our environment and the people living in them are often seen as either careless or oblivious in regards to maintaining their surrounding environment; most notably the rivers that flow through their cities. The Trinity River begins in North Texas and flows all the way to the Gulf of Mexico; it flows straight through the largest metropolitan area in the southern United States, Dallas-Fort Worth. The Trinity River along with many other rivers still flowing undeterred through large cities all across the world represent a growing change in the way our culture views nature. Urban cultures around the world have fought to preserve and save the rivers that flow through their cities from being dammed or canalized. Fort Worth is one of these proud cities that stood up to the big businesses and lobbyists to preserve the natural state of their river, the Trinity. Many more major cities such as Los Angeles, California have created urban renewal projects that not only revitalize a dilapidated area of their city but also restore the heavily polluted or channelized rivers near them. In this post-modern era urban rivers like the Trinity are finding common ground between the expansion of urban areas and the preservation of our environment as how it should be; untamed and unpolluted.…

Bridge to Terabithia 2 has style and tone that are both different and similar to the original novel. The similarities in style in Bridge to Terabithia 2 are shown when the author uses a quote from the original novel to further emphasize the theme of friendship found in both stories. The author writes, “Leaning in closely she whispered in his ear, ‘Remember Jess, nothing crushes us.’” (6). Both texts show a very close bond between Jess and Leslie. The fanfiction focuses on their relationship even more, showcasing the couple’s neverending belief in each other. In a meaningful display of this theme, the author of Bridge to Terabithia 2 writes that Jess died for a reason, to save Leslie. In the fanfiction, the tone was distinct but still held…

In “On The Bridge” by Todd Strasser my opinions of Seth and Adam were both very different. Seth seemed as if he was an echo while Adam was the voice. My opinion of Seth is that he is a follower, he wants to be exactly like Adam. Seth attempts to be like Adam in a few ways: Seth dresses like him, Seth tries to smoke like him, Seth also tries to act like he is “cool” like Adam. However, my opinion is very different for Adam, he is a fraud. Adam told Seth stories that were just nonfiction. When the three men came to confront Seth and Adam furious for a cigarette hitting their Camaro Adam told them that Seth had done it instead of taking responsibility, or fighting them like he claims to do to others. Seth needs to look up to higher quality people…
