The Brilliance of Logic
Nowadays, many rap and hip-hop songs have evolved, or rather devolved, to simple beats with lyrics that encourage violence and drug use and lack a true meaning. Logic, on the other hand, is ?distinguished by [his] confidence, passion, versatility, raw lyricism, intellect, and a Frank Sinatra-like swagger? [footnoteRef:1]. Logic?s identity is evident through not only his lyrics, but also the musical composition of his songs. His style mimics the old school style of rap, and has drawn the praise of many in the hip-hop community, including stars such as Lupe Fiasco and Nas. His mother and father were both cocaine addicts and suffered from alcoholism, while his older half brothers were cocaine dealers. Logic also endured a traumatic experience that no one could ever imagine, which he explains in his song Dear God: ?What about the time I was nine / And my mama almost murdered me? / Don?t think I forgot that s*** it still burdens me / Her bare hands tight around my throat / ?I can?t breath? The song is posed as a prayer to God, which the listener can deduce from the soft timbre of the piano in the background. All throughout, Logic prays to God, talking about his determination to reach the pinnacle of the ?rap game? and the issues that he has encountered, while also mentioning a part of his traumatizing experience as a child in his mother?s home (which I quoted in the second paragraph). The slower tempo reveals the significance of this song, while the complexity of the harmony also mirrors the complexity of Logic?s thought process throughout the tune and the entire collection.
