The Business of Being Born was an important informational film. I learned a lot about midwifes and the hospital setting. Midwifes are important for women to have when delivering a baby. I think it is good to have a natural birth. When having a natural birth at home you are more comfortable and you don't have to worry about the drugs and side affects the doctors give in the hospital setting. Women get to choose their midwifes and form a relationship with the midwifes. Midwifes are there when the women is preparing to give birth to their baby. In addition Midwifes have to be a certified Midwife nurse. The midwife comes to the home and brings all the supplies necessary for delivering the child.

This is because most people think it is ideal to go to the hospital to have a baby. Midwifes attend over 70% of births in Europe and Japan. In the United States midwifes attend less than 8 % of child births. This percent shows majority of child births are held in the hospital setting. Less than 1% of births took place at home. This fact remains the same today. Maternal care in the United States is in trouble. This is because the United States has the second worst newborn death rate in the developed world. I learned that majority of doctors have not witnessed a live birth or experience a vaginal birth. When in the hospital doctors give mothers who are pregnant medical care. When you go to the hospital nurses and doctors have a system in place for women who are pregnant and expecting to deliver. Nurses are instructed to give women pit and epidural for pain. Pit makes the woman have contractions longer and it hurts the baby giving less oxygen and blood flow. A lot of this medicine the doctors and nurses give does not help the women during pregnancy and it causes more complications and puts the baby in bad situation.
