In the poem caged bird Maya Angelou is reflecting on her own life because she felt like a caged bird do to her less right as white folks. “A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.” in this quote Maya means that she feels weighed down but she is the caged bird and telling her story is how she opens her throat to sing.
The next poem is “called mother to son” i believe mother to son is a about the author as a child and his mother is trying to tell him that her life was hard and if his life gets tough that he should keep going. “Well, son, I’ll tell you: life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
