The Call Of The Wild Character Analysis
In Jack London’s book, The Call of the Wild, the main character, Buck, has feeling changes in a cyclic kind of way. The mental and physical changes of Buck are throughout the entire book as he goes from a pampered prince to a beaten up skinned dog to a bloodthirsty leader. As Buck changes, the leaders he goes through change as well. With a variety of leaders, the whole book’s perspective changes as well. We first meet Buck as a pampered prince. He is a pet-dog in an estate in California. He was more of like the king dog of the estate. He is stolen off this estate and sold as a sled dog in Alaska. His first change as a whole is when he gets beaten by a man in a red sweater. He feels the pain surge through his body. He has never felt this before, and he understand the “primitive law” where he knows he cannot beat a man with a club. It shows how Buck reacted to his departure from civilization to a more savage, primitive world. This is the start of how Buck slowly sheds off what he learned from his civilization to adapt to a more savage, dangerous, and primitive world. This is almost a happy ending for Buck because he gains love for his new master. He almost feels like a partner to him. This changes the work as a whole because as Buck struggles to gain his mastery the reader is put through the hard times of wondering if he will actually make it . Buck’s struggles also change the book because as he changes, the way the book goes through the plot changes as well because it goes from happy, devastating, happy, devastating, and finally happy again.
