The Cane

“The Cane” is a very interesting and unusual short story. It tells of a poor family who live in a village covered with farmland that is so owned by ‘the lord’. The boy tells a time of when he witnesses a time his father was encountered by the lord, and the great fear it brought upon him. In this encounter the lord yells at the father and threatens to send him, and the whole village to beg in the street. Even with this horrendous threat the father speaks very highly of the lord to the mother when telling her what happened. After telling the tale about the encounter with the lord the boy continues to tell of a time that a man named Dumbrauckas, and how he made the boy study and read.
