The theme gives the focus of the story. It shows the message of the author’s view point for their lesson that they are writing. Theme is the reason everything in the story connects. The reason being is, because that when people think or hear about America, they think of how it is constantly changing and adapting. In the American short story, The Caretaker by Anthony Doerr, Joseph had been taken care of by his mother his whole life. One day, his mother goes to the market and doesn’t return, there was an attack and she went missing. Joseph had to learn how to cook and take care of himself. He travels to America to flee the civil war, that’s going on. He works as a caretaker for a rich person and found that he couldn’t do it because of his experience of the civil war. Joseph was confronted by whales that were washed up on the beach, he wants to bury their hearts to bury them properly. Joseph confronts the men who were cleaning the mess up and states “I’ll take the hearts. If you’re done with them” (Doerr). Doerr writes that Joseph stares into the horizon after he says that. Doerr put this in to show that Joseph is struggling to get rid of his past and wants to do something about seeing a death of something.
