First and foremost the title of Poe’s story, the cask of Amontillado means “en tønne med en halv tørr sherry” and is an expensive wine from Italy. This short story is a psychological horror or gothic fiction about two men, Fortunato and Montresor. This sarcastic anecdotes setting is dark and mysterious, however the mood is tense and hair-raising. Further out in the short story you get the feeling that something horrendous is going to happen and Poe uses an enigmatical element to create an interest from the reader. “We passed through low arches, descended, passed on, and descending again, arrived at a deep crypt, in which the air caused our torches to barely glow (Poe, 216)” This quotation explains how the setting was and the conditions booth Montresor and Fortunato experienced in the catacombs for example the torches is a metaphor for the low oxygen level.
Fortunato had a lot of wrongdoings which Montresor had simply tried to tolerate many times but when he started with insults he vowed revenge, and so he did. One late evening Montresor used Fortunato’s week point; his alleged knowledge about wine. He tricked him into the catacombs in his empty palazzo. Fortunato was already slightly drunk and was not hard to convince. The vaults were filled with damp and nitre on the walls, casks, bottles and bones from dead people. Fortunato continued drinking while they both walked further into the catacombs. When they reached the end Montresor made Fortunato enter a recess and few moments later he was chained to a wall. Montresor built a wall from bricks and finished his work by hiding the wall behind a pile of bones.
Montresor does not allow anybody that have insulted him go unpunished. “I must not only punish, but punish with impunity (Poe, 213)”. This shed light on the selfish and the vengeful side of Montresor. He is a very clever man and knows how to use his words correctly, furthermore reversed psychology is also one of Montresors
