The Cask Of Amontillado Analysis

The story opens with Montresor vowing revenge on Fortunato for his ‘thousand injuries’ and insult. He stated that his revenge would be annulled if he was punished for it and also if he failed to make the Fortunato feel the same extent of his pain. He plotted Fortunato’s death while remaining amenable with him; his smiles were at the thought of Fortunato’s immolation.

One evening during the carnival, Montresor encountered Fortunato and decided to carry out his vengeful scheme. Fortunato greeted him warmly. An invitation to sample amontillado was eagerly met by Fortunato, a connoisseur of wine, but Montresor insisted that since he was busy, he would go find Luchesi. Obstinately, Fortunato reassured him he was not and begged to go along and taste the amontillado. Using reverse psychology, Montresor refused again, saying that the drafty vaults would aggravate Fortunato’s cold. After much debate, the two headed down to Montresor’s vaults.
Montresor offered him some Medoc to alleviate his cold and they drank to the dead and Fortunato’s long life.
