The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allan Poe
"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe is a story about revenge and premeditated murder. As the story begins, Montresor immediately states his motivation. Fortunato has disrespected Montresor in some manner. Stating that he has borne “the thousand injuries of Fortunato”, Montresor now seeks revenge after being truly and blatantly insulted by him. From this, it is evident that Montresor is someone who tends to hold grudges. Montresor is a dramatic individual. Most people would rely upon basic conflict resolution where one person tells the other about how they feel wronged, but the first thing Montresor does is begin his plot to murder Fortunato.     The story takes place in Italy at a carnival where Montresor and Fortunato meet each other by chance, or so it is seems. The mood at the carnival is lively and exciting. It is then that the two men head towards the catacombs of Montresor's home in search of the wine Amontillado. The catacombs are a place of death where skeletons lie scattered against the damp walls, which are covered in nitre. Montresor dons a "mask of black silk" and a heavy knee length cloak (149). Montresor's clothes seem to indicate his wanting to conceal himself so he can carry out his devious plan. On the other side of the spectrum, Fortunato wears a "tight fitting parti-striped dress, and his head [is] surmounted by the conical cap and bells" (149). His clothing seems to indicate his trusting but foolish nature. The clothing of both men seems to set the mood for the type of characters they are. However, Montresor's true character is indicated through his words. From the beginning of the story his vengeful nature sets the tone for the acts that will follow. One of the first things that Montresor narrates to the reader about Fortunato is that he "…must not only punish but punish with impunity" (149). Montresor is also manipulative, as he tells Fortunato that he will have someone else taste the Amontillado, knowing that by doing this Fortunato will feel compelled to taste the wine himself.     The short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe is about a psychopath named Montresor who tells the story of how he murdered a man called Fortunato. The use of the murderer's perspective is very appropriate because this short story is about the emotions and events of Montresor himself and not of any other character. The story begins with Montresor explaining to the readers that he “vowed revenge” (Poe) towards Fortunato who “ventured upon insult” (Poe). Fortunato takes pride in his extensive knowledge of fine wines. Montresor uses this pride to manipulate his victim by informing Fortunato about his purchase of a rare cask of Amontillado. Montresor explains that he is not certain that he made a good deal and that he wants to ask Luchresi to confirm if it is infact the rare wine. Fortunato offers his services and follows Montresor to the family catacombs under the Montresor mansion where he assumingly stores the rare cask of Amontillado. During the long walk in the catacombs, Montresor opens bottles of wine to keep his victim drunk and uses his manipulative ways to convince Fortunato even more to continue even though Fortunato has trouble breathing because of the nitre. When reaching the end, Montresor chains his victim into a three sided crypte and starts building the forth wall. When the wall reached his middle, Montresor feels a brief moment of hesitation but continues burying Fortunato alive. At the end of the short story, Montresor reveals that fifty years have passed without anyone knowing the truth. Edgar Allan Poe's short story states that revenge has uncertain rewards and will not always give you the peace you seek.…

    In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allen Poe uses the character of Montresor to show how letting anger and resentment fester over time leads to tragedy. Montresor, who is careful and calculating, vows to take revenge on Fortunado, who has injured him somehow over a long period of time. He states that he will be avenged “at length,” meaning that he has carefully planned out his tactics (Poe 61). “Furthermore, Montressor vows to “punish with impunity,” and committing his crime in the catacombs more or less ensures his success (Poe 61). Secondly, Montresor’s festering resentment has possibly caused him mental instability. He wildly echoes Fortunado’s screams as he builds the wall in the catacombs (Poe 67). Then as Fortunado, chained to the wall, finally falls silent, Montressor appears to hesitate, stating that his “heart grew sick,” but in the end places the last brick in the wall, indicating that he is comfortable with his act of murder (Poe 68). Finally, though Poe never states clearly what Fortunado did to Montresor, he does indicate that Montresor is unhappy, which contributes to his decision to kill Fortunado. As they walk through the catacombs, Montresor states at one point that Fortunado is happy, as he once was (Poe 64). He then indicates that the Montresors were once a “great and numerous family” (Poe 64). In conclusion, Poe reaches into the depths of the human mind to show what heinous acts people are capable of when pushed to extremes; if Montresor had not let his anger fester over time, it is possible that he may have been able to find another, peaceful way to resolve his conflict with Fortunado.…
