The Cask Of Amontillado Compare And Contrast Essay
After having read the stories “ The Most Dangerous Game “ and “ The Cask of Amontillado” , “ The Most Dangerous Game is my favorite of the two. No matter what happened, they both had a way of showing their evil ways, Rainsford was a devious person, and the General was trying to trick Rainsford the whole time they were playing the game. The General is my favorite character from the story. When Rainsford was hiding in the tree and saw the General he could have attacked him by jumping down the tree as a panther, he stayed where he was. The General could have killed Rainsford when he was in the tree, but instead he stared at the tree, then he smiled and walked off knowing that he was in the tree he just didn’t do anything because he had a devious

When Rainsford first gets to Zaroff’s mansion and Ivan points the gun at Rainsford, when Zaroff hunts Rainsford, and for all the other men that Zaroff had hunted on his island. The significance of conflict is that Rainsford has no other choice, other than being whipped by the brutal force of Ivan, than to be hunted by the sick minded General Zaroff. Whose love for hunting is so extreme he hunts men. Another element I will add to Cornell’s work is key, suspense. Suspense grabs viewer’s attention, and at times makes the audience predictable, tense, and even excited. Suspense will be added to “The Most Dangerous Game” starting when Rainsford goes to Zaroff’s mansion. In the story Rainsford refuses to go into Zaroff’s library, but in the motion picture he will. This scene will be terrifying and full of suspense as Rainsford is lured in and is forced to see all the severed human heads that were once Zaroff’s hunt. This key element will also happen when Rainsford is sent out to hide from Zaroff. Towards the end of the hunt, when Rainsford last trap gets set off and…

Throughout the reading "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell there are multiple incidents of suspense. One of these moments is Rainsford's first encounter with a man named Ivan, who greeted Rainsford with pistol pointed straight at his chest. Almost immediately, the reader began to anticipate whether this character would die, survive, or suffer other consequences such as injury causing tension in the story. Another occurrence of suspense is when General Zaroff begins to tell of the most dangerous game, hence the title. As he begins tell of his life, he states that the animals he had been once so fond of hunting had ceased to be "a sporting proposition" and that they no longer were of fascination. It then became his aspiration to create…

In “The Most Dangerous Game”, the author uses many methods to develop the characters and how they see the world, themselves, and others around them. First, Rainsford gets stranded on an island after he is talking to a friend on a yacht he was on about how the hunter is dominant and how the animals hunted do not feel anything which could be foreshadowing a change in the story and what it’s based on. After he arrives on the island, Rainsford immediately goes and sees a sign of struggle in bushes and hears shots fired. This, and the way that Rainsford was able to follow the tracks of the hunter, shows that Rainsford is a fairly efficient hunter; that is, showing the audience what the main idea of the story most likely is, which the hunter vs. the hunted.…

Fear is a primal human emotion. It drives us to do things, or not do things, and generally keeps us safe. In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is neither a very relatable nor believable character. He remains confident after he gets tricked multiple times, he is too analytical of the situations he finds himself in, he doesn’t and he doesn’t seem to have very much fear about being hunted by the madman Zaroff like wild game. He also does not seem to be too skeptical of a well cultured, master sportsman, living on an unmarked island who wants to invite him into his home to stay.…

In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell shows that Rainsford is regretful, anxious, and fearful. First, it is shown that Rainsford is regretful due to the fact that General Zaroff gives him the option to play the most dangerous game or be whipped by Ivan, to which Rainsford chooses to play the game. Rainsford tries again and again to fall asleep at night, but he is helpless with his choice replaying in his mind. “Rainsford could not quiet his brain with the opiate of sleep.” Second, Rainsford’s anxiousness is shown because he is uneasy about the thought of not being able to see the day after next. Although he is a marvelous hunter, there is a possibility that he may be no match to someone who is undefeated in assassinating humans.…

Perhaps one of the reasons that “The Most Dangerous Game” is still read to this day may be because of the ambiguous ending that this short story has. The way the story is left off leads the reader to many different conclusions as to what happened. Perhaps the two most common inferences would be that either Rainsford realizes that he is becoming like Zaroff, or Rainsford realizes that he is nothing like Zaroff and takes comfort in this. There is much evidence that supports both of these theories.…

It was a cold October night when I first heard of Fortunato’s case, I was very amused at the thought of someone doing something so unhuman to a person. I guess some people can’t control their actions, but then again those people belong in a mental institution. This case in particular was very peculiar because it had gone five years without being solved. It was about a week ago when our department heard about this case, it wasn’t long before the case landed on my hands. I am after all the best detective in this state something to be proud of course. Going out to the other side of the world to solve a case was something I had never done before but this case was overdue and someone had to do something to the aggressor in order to obtain justice.…

“The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful short story because, of the use of foreshadowing, unique character, and an engaging plot to develop and build the the suspense of the story. The story has some great use of foreshadowing throughout the beginning and the middle parts to make a strong foundation for the story to be engaging. The use of foreshadowing is found within conversations between Whitney and Rainsford. The reason there is foreshadowing is because Rainsford remarks, "Don't talk rot, Whitney," said Rainsford. "You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?"(Connell 1) this gives a subtle hint that something negative might happen to Rainsford.…

The two short stories, “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe are similar in that they deal with death in a macabre fashion. Both protagonists exhibit narcissistic personalities perpetrating murders to satisfy selfish justifications. The characters Fortunato and Homer Barron were murdered in gruesome manors; Fortunato was encased in a brick wall and Homer Barron was poisoned. Beyond these two similarities the stories differ greatly.…

Commercial fiction is meant to excite the reader, to help them escape reality and "The Most Dangerous Game" has both mystery and suspense do to the nature of the continuous adventure throughout the story. This forces the reader to continuously read on to discover the next piece of the puzzle or the next twist that may occur. This could be shown through the two characters in their continuous ultimate battle against one another, this giving the example of man vs man. The two characters include, the Protagonist, Sangor Rainsford and the Antagonist, General Zaroff. Both characters present themselves to be stock characters, Rainsford being recognized world-wide for his writing and considered to be known as the western “good guy”, whereas Zaroff is made out to be the “bad guy” a recognizable Russian, with facial elements such as his thick eyebrows along with a pointed military mustache. Russians being strong enemies to the West, this begins to demonstrate elements of good vs evil. Commercial fiction is also expected to have a defined plot, majority of the time people refer to this specific plot as “page turner”.Rainsford built a Malay man-catcher and a Burmese tiger pit to try and escape Zaroff. After these traps have been set, the reader can’t help but wonder whether it is going to serve its purpose and work in his favor. After finding out the results of the traps, you can’t help but wonder what will happen next. Towards the end of the hunt, Rainsford “leaped far out into the sea.” As the reader reads this, they can’t help but wonder what Rainsford was thinking and what was going to happen to him.…

Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff are very alike in some ways. Both want to have the upper hand in an argument or situation. In the beginning of “The Most Dangerous Game”, Zaroff has the upper hand as he knows the terrain and has a threatening bodyguard. He allowed Rainsford to eat and stay at his château after he fell overboard. At the end of the story, Rainsford has the upper hand as he won “the game”, surprises Zaroff, and forces Zaroff to play the game he forced himself (Rainsford) to play.…
