Italy hundreds of years ago, had the wealthy buried in catacombs close to their family; people were also able to have better privacy and keep to themselves. In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe it is evident that privacy was a key factor in a plan of murderous revenge. Antagonist Montresor was able to carry out his vulgar way of dealing with an inconvenience by exacting revenge which when observed brings out a deeper meaning of the theme in story, one should not allow anger to fester or dictate their life. Montresor is a character that let his anger get out of hand which led it to control his life causing him to spend his time trying to find a way to get impunic revenge. Montresor kicked off his duplicitous plan of retribution by greeting Fortunato with gratitude. “I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile NOW was at the thought of his immolation” (1). One way that Montresor was able to keep Fortunato’s impaired attention was by using ironic reverse psychology. “‘Come ,’ I said, with decision,’ we will go back; your health is precious….”’(3). Montresor used reverse psychology by telling Fortunato that the niter could harm him which resulted in Fortunato feeling as though he must prove his word. Montresor lured Fortunato further in by giving him compliments that portray a false sense of friendship. “‘...You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy as once I was. You are a man to be missed….”’(3). Fortunato trusted Montresor like he was a friend and believed that Montresor would’ve done him no harm, since Montresor fueled Fortunato’s pride.
