Plot is a literary term used to describe the events that make up a story or the main part of a story (Plot). There is a certain order that the plot follows which is separated into 5 parts. The first part is the exposition, which is the beginning part that gives background to what is happening so that the reader understands why the events that are about to occur are occurring. The second part is the rising action, which is the events …show more content…
that occur to get to the third part, the climax. The climax is the turning point in the story and where most of the action takes place. The fourth part is the falling action, which is all the events that occur following the climax. The last part is the resolution or conclusion, which is the end to the story. (Plot, Literature)
According to the definition of how a plot is supposed to be, the first way is the better way to interpret the story.
It has an exposition, which is the beginning part of the story where Montressor tells us of “the thousand injuries of Fortunato” that he has endured. This is the background as to why what happens next is happening. It has the rising action, which is when Montressor leads Fortunato away from the party down into the underground tunnel. These are the events leading up to the climax. The climax is when Montressor reveals that they are in his family’s vault and he is going to close Fortunato up in a vault to die for his revenge. This is the turning point in the story because Fortunato had no idea up until now that Montressor intended to kill him until this point in the story. The falling action is when Montressor puts in the final brick and walks away from the vault. These are the events occurring after the climax. The resolution of the story is when it is revealed that this murder took place nearly 50 years ago and no one has ever found out about this
crime.
The second way to interpret the climax does not follow the definition of plot. If the story was interpreted this way, it would have an exposition, the rising action, and the climax but after that the story just stops. There is no falling action or resolution. This interpretation leaves the reader hanging and wanting more even though there is no more to give since the story is over. So since the plot is “incomplete” in this interpretation, the first way to interpret the story is indeed the better way.
