"A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading."
William Styron
• "In the highest civilization, the book is still the highest delight. He who has once known its satisfactions is provided with a resource against calamity."
Ralph Waldo Emerson
• "There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them."
Joseph Brodsky
• "To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life."
W Somerset Maugham
• "Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant, and interesting."
Aldous Huxley
• "Reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself. You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms."
Angela Carter
• "The dearest ones of time, the strongest friends of the soul – BOOKS."
Emily Dickinson
• "We don't need a list of rights and wrongs, tables of dos and don'ts: we need books, time, and silence. Thou shalt not is soon forgotten, but Once upon a time lasts forever."
Philip Pullman
• "Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul."
Joyce Carol Oates
• "I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we're reading doesn't wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for? So that it will make us happy, as you write? Good Lord, we would be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. The short Essay, An Experiment in Criticism, by C.S. Lewis brings to light many new perspectives to how people read and experience literature. Throughout the essay Lewis works to give the message that; how good a book is doesn’t depend on the quality of writing but on the reader. He begins by defining two types of readers- the “literary” and the “non-literary”- which he uses through the rest of his essay to categorize different traits for treating literature.…

The majority of my life has been smooth-sailing. For most of my life, I was told not to meddle in other people’s affairs and to not think too much about what others say. As a result, I would say that I have faced very little struggles. In the article “Nerd Alert: Reading is Good For Your Health,” the author Jen Christensen describes aspects of reading that may be beneficial towards our emotional and mental health, including how to face those struggles that I never had. Instead, I read books for the sake of reading. Occasionally, I would read a book that would especially resonate with me, and then I would feel that I have reached into the soul of another person, rather than just bland words on a page. Sometimes, I forget that the authors are human beings as well, and they may as well have the same struggles as me. Often times, I wonder about the people behind the books, and how much of themselves they poured into their books. Books, instead of consoling me about my own problems, made me more aware of other people and expand my worldview.…

“The right good book is always a book of travel; it is about a life’s journey.” This quote was written by H.M. Tomlinson. This quote means that the proper story is all the time a book about advancements; it is about personal growth. I agree with the interpretation because in all good books people change and mature. One work of literature that I have read which relates to the quote is the book Holes by Louis Sachar. Another book that supports the quote is the book, Monster, by Walter Dean Myers.…
