Step 1: Evaluate the act using Kant’s categorical imperative
1. State your proposed act as a maxim:
‘’I will take ZAR620 000 000.00(A) when I’ve done a year’s work (C) in order to get really, really rich (E).”
1 Restate this maxim as a universal law;
‘’All people(7 billion of them) will take ZAR 620 000 000.00 when they’ve done a year’s work in order to get really, really rich.’’
1 Ask whether your maxim is conceivable in a world ruled by the universal law
It is impossible for all the people of the world to earn this kind of salary given the fact that not all the people are educated and skilled to be CEO’s and if it were the case then there will be no one to do the spade work and our financial institutions will run out of cash to pay all the people these huge amounts. Therefore the stated maxim is not conceivable in a world ruled by the universal law.
1 Ask whether you would rationally act on your maxim in such a world
It is irrational to think that one person deserve to earn such a huge salary even if that person is highly skilled in whatever he or she is doing.This creates big income gaps to those who are not skilled and this kind of remuneration promotes capitalism which exploits the poor people. Therefore inworld governed by the maxim in step 2 I would stop acting on this maxim and that is the rational thing to do. Step 2 : Form an opinion What would Kant probably have said about Whitey Basson eraning ZAR 620 000 000.00 Kant would definitely think that it is immoral for a single person to earn a huge salary that can be used build houses for about 11000 households who are homeless.
What do you think about Whitey Basson earning ZAR 620 000 000
I think this package is highly exorbitant and no one deserve to earn this in the normal situation. Why do you think this?
Because Mr Basson is not working alone he has subordinates
