After battling for her life for six days, suspected child abuse victim, 14 month old Nurain Damia Mohd Naqudden, die from her injuries yesterday morning. Petaling, Jaya Police chief ACP Azmi Aby Kassim said the toddler succumbed to her injuries at Sungai Buloh Hospital at 8.20 am. He said Nurain Damia has slipped into a comma a day after she was rushed to the hospital and her condition did not improve from that point. Police have remanded and are interrogating the girl’s babysitter over the incident. The babysitter had at first claimed the child suffered a fail while under her care in Flora Damansara on July 7. But, the doctors said injuries on the toddler were not consistent with that of a fail. Azmi said during interrogation the suspect has admitted she had hit the baby girl on her head but only slowly using her hands.
Averages of five children are abused every week in Malaysia, and the main culprits are babysitters and maids. Fathers make up the second largest number of abusers, according to police statistics. Most of the victim are boys and the most vulnerable age group is between one and seven years Malaysia’s police headquarters Bukit Aman principal assistant director of D11(sexual crime, domestic violence and child abuse investigations division). Assistant Commissioner Hamidah Yunus said 295 cases of child abuse were recorded last year, a 3.5 percent increase from 2012. Eighty-nine of the 312 suspected abusers were babysitters or maid while 76 of them were the fathers of the children while the rest were mothers, relatives, teachers and others. Eight children were recorded to have died from physical abuse last year, one more than in 2012.
