The Character August Boatwright
The character that I admire is August Boatwright. The reason that I admire her is because she’s very caring. In the book when Lily and Rosaleen arrived at the pink house and May opened the door, June walking over to the door and not wanting them there. They finally say that they are there for the honey and that they would like to talk to the lady that made it. They called August over, letting Rosaleen and Lily into the house. August made it seem like she cared about them and i know she did by her body expressions in the movie. Knowing August she asked where they were headed and Lily had no idea so she made something up and said that they were going to Lily's aunt's’ house. But she also said that she didn’t have any money or any directions to get there. August …show more content…
When Rosaleen showed up to the Boatwrights house she looked beat up because of what happened to her in her home town. August asked what had happened to her and Rosaleen was about to answer but Lily stepped in and said that she fell down a couple of stairs. The August was so thoughtful and said that she would clean up her cut on her head. August also bought Rosaleen clothes to stay in so that she wasn’t in clothes that had blood everywhere. Rosaleen said that August didn’t have to and that she would pay every penny back, August said just to work it off for her because she didn’t mind helping someone out. August cared for people, she would use her own money just to help out people. If she was helping me and cared about what I did, then I would honor her in so many ways, she would mean so much to me because her just lending a hand can make so many people's lives better. In my own perspective this is why i would choose August Boatwright as the character that I admire the most out of the rest of the character in the book The Secret Life of Bees. I would totally want a personality like August because it would make my life easy and lighten up other people's life around

And she throws them all away. One of Lily's biggest issues is pride, which we can blame for these failed marriage opportunities. She's too proud to talk to Rosedale, to let Bertha think that Selden came to Bellomont to visit her, to explain her side of the story regarding the Monte Carlo affair, or to marry a man like Selden who isn't dripping hundred dollar bills out of his pores. She can't even allow herself to be true friends with a caring woman like Gerty because she's too "dingy." Time and time again, Lily recoils from any sign of poverty (or anything that isn't elaborate or doesn't represent extreme wealth) as though it were physically contaminating.…

She was very mature for her age and her actions reminded me of myself as a little girl. Her sassy and confident attitude made me laugh at times. I also enjoyed how Holden didn’t realize the real problem in his life, was himself. As he was judging others for the qualities he found irritating he wasn’t able to see himself displaying those qualities himself, whom I believed caused many problems throughout the story. 2.…

The comment one of the men made toward Rosaleen was cruel because at the end he made a racial slur towards her. The reason why he did this was that he felt that Rosaleen was inferior since she was of color. After the racist comment was made Lily told Rosaleen not to ignore them and keep going. Lily showing concern for Rosaleen contributes to the overall theme because Lily views Rosaleen as more than just a color. She views her as a part of her family and doesn't let anything stop it.…

She is not like Rosaleen who cooks for her and cleans up for her but she is like a mother to lily. August is Lily's second surrogate mother, and she gives lily knowledge. She intuitively recognizes what lily needs and acknowledges immediately whose daughter lily is. She waits for her until she comes to tell August a story about her mother, and she holds lily while she lets out all her rage. August give lily the fearlessness to listen to herself and that a women could be strong and who does good in the world. Then is this quote it says,” There is nothing perfect,” August said from the doorway. “There is only life ( pg 256 ).” To me that quote is very strong and it would help Lily forget about her mother. Also, this quotation is significant because it reveals how Lily was not handling what August told her very well. Lily kept bothering T. Ray for not telling her what her mother was like. Lily’s father, T. Ray, only deepens this conviction, telling Lily that her mother only came back for her things, not for her daughter. This false belief that her mother died regretting her existence destroys Lily. She grows to have such a strong desire to feel loved that it begins to control her in a negative way, making her feel constantly unwanted. Meeting the Boatwright’s, she finally is surrounded by the kind of love and affection she so desperately needed. Staying at the honey house, she learns more than the honey business itself, she begins to realize that the same lessons they teach her about the bees can apply to her life. When explaining how to handle the bees, August says, “Above all, send the bees love. Every little thing wants to be loved.” (92) To be loved is all Lily has ever wanted, and once she begins living in the honey house, she realizes how loved she truly is, and has been all of her life, even though she didn’t know it. The love that nearly all the people in Lily’s life have for her is as immense as Pip’s love for Estella, but for her, it took many years of darkness before she could finally see the light. Once Lily opens her heart, she realizes how extraordinary it can be to both love and be loved: “I myself, for instance. It seemed like I was now thinking of Zach forty minutes out of every hour, Zach, who was an…
