Critical thinking is deliberately taking the time to think about ones thinking in order to ultimately improve said thinking. Although this is perhaps an overly simplistic statement, it captures the essence of critical thought. Critical thinking is a method of reasoning that starts off with a purpose and identifying a problem; from there, possible solutions are posed and as much information as possible is collected, assumptions and inferences are then made about the situation, and then the testing phase, in which an attempt is made to verify the results of the assumptions in regard to the problem.
Why is critical thinking and important skill to master as part of professional work?

Each of these elements work with, and are reliant on each other. Changing how any one of these are used will inevitably influence the others. For example, critical thinking in professional work will require acknowledgment of what the purpose of the work is; or in other words, what is the reason for doing the project? The purpose would then determine the questions asked, and then influence the information that is collected. Since information is the core of almost any project, it may greatly impact the overall quality of the work.
