EARTH
• Is made up of three physical states of materials :
- SOLID MATERIALS
- LIQUID MATERIALS
- ENVELOPE GASES
GEOLOGISTS - Studied Earth’s interior through indirect observation of waves during earthquake
- studies Earth’s interior
EARTH is divided into three layers namely:
* CRUST
* MANTLE
* CORE
CRUST – OUTERMOST and THINNEST LAYER
- ranging from 5 to 100 km. thick
- upper part of the lithosphere
- where people and other living things live
- divided into the continental crust and oceanic crust
CONTINENTAL CRUST – crust beneath the continents that has an average thickness of about 32 km.
- the composition of the continental crust is similar to granite rocks
OCEANIC CRUST – crust beneath the ocean - the oceanic crust has an average thickness is only about 8 km. thick
MANTLE
•
•
•
•
•
Layer between crust and core
Extends to a depth of about 2900 km.
Largest layer of Earth
Covers about 67% of the Earth’s mass
Believed to be made up of thick liquid containing the elements :
# SILICON
# OXYGEN
# IRON
# MAGNESIUM
• Temperature and the pressure of the mantle increase in depth ranging from 870 to 2200 °C.
CORE
• Extends from the mantle to the center of the Earth
- divided into inner and outer core
- comprises 33% of earth’s mass
• OUTER CORE – extends from about
2900 km.
- about 2250 km. thick
- made up of hot liquid molten materials that contain iron and nickel
- temperature ranges from 2200 to
5000 °C.
INNER CORE
• Innermost layer of earth
• Begins at a depth of about 5150km
• It is believed to consist primarily of an iron–nickel alloy, and to be approximately the same temperature as the surface of the Sun: approximately 5430 °C.
