The Charmer
Winnifred is the the protagonist of the story and the story is told from her perspective. As a child, Winnifred is a trusting girl who’s naive and pure child’s mind sees no faults in her elder brother, Zack, and gets manipulated into thinking he is a saint. This can be seen in the quotes,
“I was Zachary’s willing slave” and “My heart lay open and eager.” However as she grows up and starts to comprehend the circumstances of her household, she starts to identify the negative effects that Zack’s
“charm” has on her family. And although able to understand that her brother is flawed, she still looks up to him. The quote, “
By the time I was thirteen, Zachary’s halo was dimming, but I still adored him,” shows this. This shows that she is still faithful at this point in her life.
Nevertheless, although WInnifred admires Zack as a child, as an adult, she becomes a wise, determined mother, eager to not make the mistakes she and her own mother made in the past. As Winnifred matures into adulthood and the negative effects of not recognizing Zack’s faults earlier becomes evident in her mother, Winnifred applies the mistakes made by her parents to how she raises her own children. This shows that Winnifred is a dynamic character. Zachary’s character and his effect on his family members is the main focus of the story. Zachery is the elder brother of Winnifred and growing up, he is a rebellious teen who seems to get through life relying on his charm. Zachary is described as being very beautiful, loved and cherished by everyone around him, as shown in the quote,
“He was surrounded by a bevy of admirers.”
He uses his wit to get out of every problematic situation. However, his “charm” can be seen as a form of euphemism and can be

He explains in the story that he and his family were trying so hard to be a model middle-class family in the Harlem 1950's. Growing up as a happy and popular young man, Zack creates himself a perfect reputation which left room for love and smothering from his mother and two sisters. His mother and sisters love him very much and show this love by being at his every beckoning. Winifred is no exception; the love for Zack is shown by the extraction, "How be you wash my bike for me, Pose, Love?" I would be halfway to the kitchen for bucket and rags before he stopped speaking. [And] I was Zachary's willing slave. Slavery in fact, was a vogue in our house."(Wilson,101). Zack from a very young age is overwhelmed with love and good deeds sent in his direction. He takes advantage of these kind gestures and never really appreciates what was being done for him. This lack of appreciation and constant smothering is noticed by his father at later stages in the story and creates a level of confliction between them throughout the story. His father makes the mistake of not saying anything about his disagreement with the way Zack is treated and allows the conflict to continue. "Even Dad took a long time to wake up. You wouldn't think a fourteen – or sixteen-year-old-boy could hoodwink a father… [And] Dad would just leave the room and go out to his work shed and sit and rock and rock in that old chair of his." (Wilson,103). His father new there was a problem but did not act on it until the situation reached its climax which resulted in Zack leaving home. The problem is allowed to escalate at the time. The father does not play…

I am not the only one whom she embraced--her brother, Benjamin, was born with down syndrome but welcomed into her world and family. She takes care of her brother with great patience despite the fact that he can be exceptionally stubborn. John Pizer’s criticism of Donald Barthelme’s Snow White talks about the origin story of Snow White and how this modern adaptation completely skews the classic tale. The concept of the “anti-fairy tale” is brought up as Pizer compares Barthelme’s tale to those that preceded his. Barthelme is derives influence from multiple sources which focus on the disenchantment of the iconic Disney princess. From these influences, a new and much more jaded version of Snow White appears in which the traditional morals associated with her character are inverted and satirized.…
