Healthcare is ever changing. The healthcare profession is also changing. The career options, speciality options within professions, employment settings and environments available to practitioners is increasing and getting more varied. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP, 2014) alone lists six options available to just one of these professions including sports, research, lecturing, Consultant, manager and owning your own private practice. This list is not exhaustive and increasingly physiotherapists are finding new areas to work and specialise in. The era of the new ‘boundaryless career’ is upon us (Arthur and Rousseau, 1996).

My lifeline
The above lifeline is similar to that of most people in that it has the usual transitions in life such as qualifying from University, getting my first job and travelling. There are however two notable incidents which I feel have shaped my current standing.
Incident 1
I had always thought after qualifying from University I would return home and get a job there. However the poor economic climate enforced an employment moratorium in the public health service, as well as reducing, greatly, the number of people attending private clinics for treatment.
In 2010, one year after qualifying, I finally got to move home. I got a job working in a private clinic which came with the promise of hands on mentorship and guidance and regular in- service training and peer review sessions. It didn’t take long to realise that these promises were never going to be fulfilled. I was made to feel that I should be grateful I had even got this job, never mind to expect training also. Naively I thought by showing I was interested in all aspects of the business my employer would see I was keen to learn. I filled in for the secretary when she was out, saw patients well outside of my hours of work and cleaned up after colleagues but none of this was recognised.
