The Choice Of Narrator In To Kill A Mockingbird
In novels, the choice of narrator is an incredibly important decision for the author. The author chooses a narrator that will best tell the story equally and non-biased. In To Kill A Mockingbird, if Scout wasn’t the narrator then the story might have been biased toward white or black people . Also, the choice of narrator in To Kill a Mockingbird affects the themes of the novel by giving the reader an unbiased perspective of the injustice in the story.

“To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a perfect example of how the plot progression of the story was closely related to the character development. Lee used Jean Louise, also known as “Scout” as a main model of character development, as she grows through her understandings of racism, how to handle social situations and her intelligence . The plot progression throughout the novel was very close in relationship of bildungsroman in the characters personal stories. This book being fiction is not true but it depicts how life was during the time period of the 1930’s. The characters also are very close to portraying common people of the time in Macon County of Alabama.…

Courage is characterized as mental or moral strength to surpass notions of fear. As demonstrated by Atticus Finch and Mrs Dubose in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the development of courage gives the character’s strength and courage to hold their heads high, while fearing none. Harper Lee depicts the theme of courage incalculable amount of times, detailing courage as “ when you know you’re licked before you being, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Chapter 11, Page 124) All of the characters have an alternate kind of perspective of what courage is exactly, which will be examined in depth.…

There are three characters that could best be called the protagonists in To Kill a Mockingbird. One of those three characters is Scout, the reason that Scout is a protagonist in To Kill a Mockingbird, is because the story is told from her point of view as she is the narrator. This is best shown in the following excerpts from chapter one “When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem…” and “… my father, Atticus Finch…” by having her refer to Jem as “… my brother…” and Atticus as “… my father…” in To Kill a Mockingbird. She thus, illustrates that she is the narrator and the one whose point of view To Kill a Mockingbird is told from, and by being both of those things she is proven as the…

Because Radley has a lot of rumours. “People said he went out at night when the moon was high, and peeped in windows. When people’s azaleas froze in a cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them. Any stealthy crimes committed in Maycomb were his work.” Their lifestyles are very different, special and incomprehensible. “The Radleys, welcome anywhere in town, kept to themselves, a predilection unforgivable in Maycomb. They did not go to church, Maycomb’s principal recreation, but worshipped at home; Mrs Radley seldom if ever crossed the street for a mid-morning coffee break with her neighbours and certainly never joined a missionary circle. Mr.Radley walked to town at eleven-thirty every morning and came back promptly at twelve; sometimes carrying a brown paper bag that the neighbourhood assumed contained the family groceries’.” They are also mysterious to the children.” I never knew how old Mr.Radley made his living-Jem said he ‘bought cotton’, a polite term for doing nothing – but Mr.Radley and his wife had lived there with their two sons as long as anybody could remember.” The children themselves are really curious." He would stand hugging the light-pole on the corner, the more he would wonder.” The house is mysterious, too. “The house was low, was once white with a deep front porch and green shutters, but had long ago darkened to the colour of the…

The narrator in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is Scout a young and intelligent girl who should rightfully be the narrator. Scout should be the narrator in the story because of the fact of how mature and well developed her comprehension level is as a six year old girl. For example stated in the article above “she does not hesitate to judge adults for their actions and attitudes”. This exemplifies that she is not scared of telling an adult off for a wrong action he/she did which means she is a matured character to be a narrator.…

To begin with, Harper Lee reveals who really is the hero of the novel when she shows the readers, Atticus Finch, the man that stands up for Tom Robinson, a black man, even knowing that he will lose, be ridiculed and hated by many. Scout can’t understand why Atticus would do that, so Atticus says, “‘For a number of reasons,’ said Atticus. ‘The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold my head in town, I couldn’t…

To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, narrates an unbiased, non-filtered, and innocent viewpoint from that of Scout Finch. If the novel were to be rewritten from another’s perspective (such as Jem’s or Atticus’), the main concept of the book would be altered. The narrative of Atticus Finch would influence less of an impact; his knowledge and experience with the town of Maycomb would weaken the depth of Tom Robinson’s case. Just like Scout’s—Jem’s outlook would also call attention to the problematic practice of racism. However, his sense of understanding the immorality of it is more mature than her. His narrative would seem biased; which insinuates that Harper Lee would have written To Kill a Mockingbird to discriminate against racists.…

I believe in judging someone by their actions and character rather than by the color of their skin and sexuality. This I believe because there is good and bad in all of us. The color of our skin does not depict the flaws we have. In the second amendment it states that all men are created equal, but we still do not treat each other equally. Defending Tom Robinson was not easy because I knew that from the minute Mayella opened her mouth Tom was a dead man. But everyone including a black man deserves a second chance. How could I ever tell my own children “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” if I didn’t pick up Tom’s case because I was afraid of what people would think of me. When people say things about me like “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets” why would I prove them wrong? You are only as good as you portray yourself to be. But when you are a black man in the town of Maycomb, Alabama you were never dealt the good hand to begin with. Sadly Tom never got a second chance. Tom was a good man but because of the color of his skin he was not treated as fairly as the rest of us.…

Tom shows maturity towards Becky when they are trapped in the cave. Tom and Becky are stranded in the cave and are starting to lose hope in finding civilization again. They envy all of the things they had taken for granted such as their beds and all the food they had. When Becky starts sobbing her heart out, instead of Tom watching he decides to do something about it.“He sat down by her and put his arm around her; she buried her face in his bomon, she clung to him, she poured out her terrors , her unavailing regrets, and far echoes turned them all to jeering laughter” (Twain 226). This gesture helps comfort Becky during a tough and scary time. This shows maturity because he isn’t thinking about just himself and is trying to be strong even…

Learning lessons is a very important part of growing up. Children learn new things every day of their life. Even adults learn something every once in a while. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the character Scout is very adventurous and loves to learn; she has many experiences that lead to her being taught many different things about life. In one way or another, every episode leads to some type of learning experience for Scout”. Scout learns a lot of different things about her town’s views, the people who she’s heard about but never really knew, and how to treat others the proper way.…
