The Coca Cola Company Began In The Early 1900's
Context Beginning in the early 1900’s, America began to change for the better. Albert Einstein began making important discoveries. Forward passes in football were made legal. The FBI was created. Toasters were even invented. But with all these important inventions and discoveries going on, the Coca-Cola company believed that America needed one American drink that would help the inventors through a restless night at the desk, or just relieve some pressure during a break from working. For the company said that Coca-Cola is a “Delightful and healthful beverage” and that it “Relieves fatigue and any mental or physical exhaustion for every businessman, student, or athlete.” The Coca-Cola company began to evolve, and had now become the nation’s …show more content…
There were so many important inventions in that decade, that the years 1900-1910 have been called “The decades that invented the future”. Through these years, cultural ideas began to change throughout America. One cultural change would be the famous Coca-Cola beverage. While some companies went about promoting their products with celebrities and beautiful women, the Coca-Cola company took a different approach. They gained their audience’s attention through credibility and logic, which successfully made Americans throughout the nation want to buy …show more content…
“Coca-Cola is a delightful, palatable, and healthful beverage.” By placing this line at the beginning of the ad, the company succeeds in establishing good credibility for the product, and grabbing the reader’s attention, so they would then want to continue reading the rest of the ad. As the audience continues reading the ad, they come across another credible line, “It relieves fatigue and mental and physical exhaustion”. By taking credit for these far fetched side-effects, it further entices the reader into wanting to buy this latest sensation throughout America. At the very end of the ad, the company tries to establish even more credibility. They tell their audience that Coca-Cola is “The most refreshing drink in the world”. The company does a good job at strategically placing this as the last thing the audience will read. By placing this as the very last sentence of the ad, the readers will have that on their mind throughout the day, and would eventually buy the product. Through doing so, Coca-Cola has achieved their ad’s goals by making their audience buy their product. Creating some good logic points in an ad is also helpful towards a successful business. For example, an ad with good logic and reasoning is more likely to get more attention and sell more product than an ad with either absurd

    1. The insight that Melissa Rubin gives the reader about the Coca-Cola ad is how the company persuades consumers to buy their product.     When Pharmacist John Pemberton invented Coke in 1886, it was the original energy drink claiming to have restorative powers. The original ingredients of Coke also included a small amount of Cocaine, but this was eliminated from the ingredients in 1903. Coca-Cola is made of water, sugar, a few secret flavors and some bubbles. But behind the product itself is where marketing has played a key role in Coca-Cola’s domination of the market place. Coca-Cola promises more than a beverage, it promises good cheer and happy memories. In the early 1900’s it was exceptionally difficult to decipher between Coca-Cola and Coca-Nola - amongst other competitors. Eventually Coke set itself apart with a design challenge that led to a bottle design, created by Earl Dean in 1915, called the “hobble skirt.” This design would forever set Coca-Cola apart from it’s competitors. Robert Woodruff – head of Coca-Cola for nearly 60 years, starting in 1923 - was also credited with many brilliant ideas including: the six-pack, standardized cooler, and tieins to Olympic events. Woodruff also promised to bring Coke to the US troops during WWII for only a nickel. This promise lead to extreme loyalty from those 11 million Americans that returned home. With artworks done by Norman Rockwell and the association Coke made with Santa Clause, Coke once again, found ways to associate their brand with Americana and wonderful memories. Eventually Pepsi entered the scene with a happy little jingle and offered twice as much soda for the same amount of money. By 1983 Coke only held 24% of the market share. Pepsi was beating Coke in the market. In April of 1985 Coke changed the formula of their soft drink. This outraged consumers and was ultimately an epic failure - turned into a big win.
