The Code Of Chivalry

It has been almost 900 years since “The Song of Roland”, in which it is described the norms the knights had to follow in the 8th century, was written. This code of conduct is known as The Code of Chivalry. Even though many people argue that the values and rules established in the Code of Chivalry are irrelevant in today’s society, many of these are important still. Some might say it is death but there are rules that many people live day-to-day such as fighting for the welfare of all, to protect the weak and defenseless, and to respect the honor of women.
Firstly, people who become part of the United States Armed Forces have to follow a code of conduct in which is established “I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and
our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.” These people are expected to fight for their nation and give their lives like the knights in the Middle Ages were expected to do it. The people who represent us as a nation and fight for us still believe in this concept of chivalrous conduct
Moreover, chivalrous acts are known better as acts of gentleness. Man are require to behave like a gentlemen in front of a lady, which means:
Today, there are many institutions that were created to protect those who don’t have much or don’t have someone to look after them. For instance, The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
Louisa May Alcott, a renowned novelist and poet, said “Gentlemen, be courteous to the old maids, no matter how poor and plain and prim, for the only chivalry worth having is that which is the readiest to pay deference to the old, protect the feeble, and serve womankind, regardless of rank, age, or color”
