Born in Eatonton Georgia 1944,Walker was self conscious growing up because of an accident that changed her life. At 8 years old her brother accidently shot her in the eye with a BB gun and blinded her. In 1961 she attended college at Spelman then transferred to Sarah Lawrence in 1963. After graduating in 1965 Walker moved to Mississippi as a civil rights activist. Here she met and married a white civil rights attorney in 1967 named Melvyn Leventhat.They were the first legally married interracial couple to live in Jackson Mississippi.
