The Conch Quotes
The Conch is a ‘magical’ object, and it represents order. The Conch gives the wielder a chance to speak uninterrupted as stated in the quote “surprisingly, there was silence now…” (180). This represents order because the people on the island will listen to other people’s ideas to see if they are logical or illogical. The secondary objective in chapter 11 is to re-establish order in Jack’s tribe, Ralph tries to do this by trekking to Castle Rock with the Conch as a ‘talisman’. This shows how Ralph tries to use the Conch to convince people to stop being savage and disorderly. In real life, many ‘civilized’ countries sent people (missionaries) to ‘uncivilized’ countries to show them order. Finally, order is broken as the end of the chapter in
the quote “the Conch exploded into a thousand white fragments…he hurled his spear at Ralph” (181) Jack throws his spear at Ralph, illustrating that he will not listen to Ralphs ideas. This is the opposite of order, in order Ralph would have his chance at reasoning with Jack. Once the Conch is destroyed, order is too, and Jack precedes to attack Ralph and ignoring all reason.
