Tom and Amanda are in conflict in scene three. The conflict is started by Amanda because Tom used the Lord’s name in vain. This continues to escalate, due to Amanda taking away Tom’s DH Lawrence book as she invades his privacy and personal life after work. The argument ends as Tom angrily walks away from his mother, since she continues to criticize him for the way he spends his own money.

Typically, Laura finds comfort by tending to her glass figures through cleaning and polishing. Tom, on the other hand, likes to escape by leaving the house and going to the movies. The movies allow him to be alone and do what he wishes with his hard earned money.

After the conflict between Tom and Amanda in scene three, I sympathize with Tom. He is the man in the family that is providing money for their family to survive off of. He does not deserve his mother treating him like a teenager that needs to be lectured on how he likes to spend his free time or even what books he chooses to read. I continue to think that Williams wish you to feel conflicted about Amanda. She Tom’s mother and is looking out for her family, but does little to help the well being of the family other than nagging.
