That’s the name that was given to a native woman slave that was gifted to these settlers that was believed to be God. A white bearded man on a horse (there were no horses in this part of the world so to them it was something they thought was god's creator). Once she was gifted to Cortes they gave her the name Marina, which we know her as Doña Marina or La Malinche. She eventually fell in love with Cortes and Doña Marina was put in a position of trust by Cortes and the Spanish Army. Doña Marina's is now questioned and accused on her position of her character cause what she did. It's my belief that she wasn't as pleasant nor happy as people assumed she was. She was a slave and was given up by her own people so I feel she was smart but devious. She was given the name La Malinche because in Spanish it means a person that is a traitor, disloyal or untrue to ones people or race. Since Doña Marina was a slave within her own tribe, I can see the resentment for the natives and what she did to her tribe. She gave in to her new life and learned Spanish, their ideas, culture, customs and even religion. She assumed the role of translating for the Spanish to the natives and helped Cortes plan attack on the Aztec empire. She also lied to the Aztecs and confirmed their belief that Cortes was in fact God. “El sueño de la Malinche” the painting is telling me a lot of things like how she has the whole town's weight on her. Even the shape reflects of the area of where they lived in the area what is now known as Mexico city. The divide of the town symbolizes how she's torn between her native people and her new family, the Spaniards. The one house on top of the mountain symbolizes her home how she foresees everyone and trying to look out the best interest of everyone. Even her head, she looks uncomfortable and maybe not even sleeping. Like she's giving the perception that everything is ok but she under stress because all the conflict of interest and she's stuck in the middle. She even appears to be clothe less.
