Gangs generally consist of three or more members; they create an ambiance of fear and often engage in delinquency. Factors of gang involvement include influence from family and friends, academic failure, and an unstable home environment. Some people join a gang as a form of protection. However, gang members actually have a higher chance of being victimized. The effects of gang membership do not stop after you leave a gang, especially for active members. Some of the consequences include unstable employment, having a criminal record, and imprisonment. Additionally, some gang members experience health issues because of drug and alcohol abuse. Once you are gang affiliated, it is difficult to leave and get back on the right track.
There are two main gangs in Lord of the Flies: Ralph’s tribe and Jack’s tribe. Although Jack’s tribe was more menacing, both tribes engaged in violent activities. Both tribes had their own leader, territory, and symbol to identify their tribe. Jack’s tribe utilized face paint and Ralph’s tribe had a conch. Jack’s tribe intimidated and persuaded others to join his tribe through acts of violence. For instance, Jack and Roger pressured Sam and Eric to join their gang. How would you feel if someone constant mistreated you? If you feel the urge to attack someone, think about the consequences of your decisions. Try to find a healthier way to release your emotions. You do not need to join a gang to feel accepted or protected. By joining a gang, you give up your individuality and freedom because they will control your life. Once you are in a gang, there is no guarantee you will get out. There are many safe places and people you can go to if you isolated or victimized. An act of vengeance or coercion will not make things better for you; it will only make things worse. In order to have a better future, we need to start fixing the problems that are occurring today. Be that person who stops bullying when they see it. Be that person who does not join a gang. Be that person who does not use violence to solve their problems. We can choose to have violence, or we can choose to have peace. It is up to us to decide how we will continue to live our lives. E.F.
