Body Paragraph 1#
Elaborate on “She’s the Man” and “Twelfth Night”, and emphasize on the mood, symbolism and imagery portrayed in the different situations and how they are similar:
Situation 1: “Play On” and “Music”
1. In Twelfth Night, Orsino says “If music be the food of love, play on”, play on can be portrayed as music playing on. The symbol of music is shown a lot and is compared to as love itself, this is proven through the quote above.
2. In She’s the Man, the concept of “playing on” can be found in the game of soccer itself and keeping Viola’s passion for it and her love for it. Sebastian leaves to go to London to pursue his musicianship and his passion for music.
Situation 2: the Playful Mood
1. The whole mood of Twelfth Night is undoubtedly very playful and cheerful due to the fact that the story is based on love and tricks between characters
2. She’s the Man also creates a playful mood throughout the movie, including the carnival scene and the makeover scene as they are very casual scenarios.
Body Paragraph 2#
Explain how She’s the Man and Twelfth Night differentiates through mood, symbolism and imagery.
Situation 1: Reason and mood to become “man”
1. The reason as to why Viola becomes a “man” is due to the fact that during that period of time, money was an issue for woman as they did not receive as well jobs. She becomes a man so that she can make a living in a beautiful place such as the kingdom of Illyria.
2. Viola becomes a “man” not because of financial issues or employment issues, but because of her passion for the sport of soccer which coincidentally also benefits her brother who will have to go to London and skip school.
Situation 2: Relationships between characters
1. There is much more focus and scenes that show the relationship between Olivia and Cesario and how their Romantic Love blooms and develops throughout the course of the story in the play
2. The development between Olivia and Viola VS Viola and Duke is equally focused on, however, the relationship between Olivia and Viola is shown much more in the beginning whereas the relationship between Viola and Duke is shown more in the ending
Body Paragraph 3# - Give examples to show how the themes portrayed in She’s the Man and Twelfth Night are similar.
Situation 1: Mistaken Identity
1. Mistaken Identity plays a major role in the play and is a big theme. In fact, it is only because of Mistaken Identity that the conflict began. However, the theme of Mistaken Identity brings both good and bad situations towards the characters. Examples of Mistaken Identity include many scenes, e.g Kiss From Olivia, Relationship between Duke and Viola, Misunderstanding between Monique and Sebastian.
2. The theme is also the main reason as to how the whole play unfolds and the dilemma arose. At the same time, Mistaken Identity caused a lot of confusion and shock to a lot of the characters. In this case, examples include the Marriage between Olivia and Cesario/Sebastian (Similar to the Kiss), the Situation in which Everyone is reunited and the plot unfolds.
Situation 2: Love
1. There are many types of love shown in the Movie – including Sibling Love and Romantic Love. You can see the Sibling Love through the closeness of Sebastian and Viola and how they can relate to each other not only physically, but mentally as well. The emotion of Romantic Love is also shown between Viola and Duke/Duke and Olivia/Sebastian and Olivia/Malvolio
