In today’s African American community, many speak and use a different form of “standard” English. Ebonics is a form of English that was established by the early US slaves in search of a reliable means of communication. During slavery, there were laws which mandated that any person caught teaching a slave to read or write could be fined and/or put in jail. This left them to fend for themselves and create their own form of communication. As time has progressed, the Black slag, known as Ebonics, is recognized by many as a less sophisticated form of English. From a linguistics stand point, the use of this slang leads to a negative reflection on the people within the African American culture. And it should be noted, this can be said for any culture within a society’s norms for language. The use of Ebonics merely handicaps the African American society and limits their success and respectability among the educated world due to its negative connotations and…

This is “part of a apparently universal phenomenon that sociolinguists call covert prestige” (Savan 377). Most other nations in the world have declared a universal language and they still have covert prestige. Margaret Lee was quoted by Leslie Savan saying that “speakers of a “standard” language (whatever the language) have favorable attitudes toward lower-class, nonstandard speech forms… when new forms enter the mainstream, in fact, they usually come fro nonstandard speech” (Savan 337). When new words are brought into everyday speech they normally originated from slang. The word “bling” can now be found in the dictionary, meaning it is recognized as a word, but African American hip-hop artists first used it. This is just one example of how covert prestige is present in our…

“Errything that I got, I got from slangin birds!” (2 Chainz). What does it mean to slang birds? As times change so does music and the culture around it. Times have been changing and creating a mold for what we now call pop music and rap. The pop culture and the pop music go hand and hand in these ever changing times. The youth that are growing up in society today are being exposed to new and distasteful music which it is having a negative effect on them. A lot more is allowed on radio and public broadcast than what used to be viewed as acceptable. This has made a negative shift in the culture of youth. Heavy factors for this are suggestive lyrics, scandalous videos, fashion among…

e second reason schools should not ban books is that kids should know about the real world. This is important because you don’t want your child to be oblivious to the world around them. University Wire says“By removing or banning books from schools, you are depriving the students from having these experiences and learning from them. You stop protecting them from the world and start damaging their growth and ability to live in it properly. Banning hurts more than it helps, and when it happens, no one wins." (University Wire) This quote validates that kids should know about the world they live in.Clearly, kids should know about the world around them. The last reason that schools should not ban books is kids sometimes need a book to open up their…

My experience with Accelerated Reader (AR) is not long, but I started doing ARs when I got to Leilehua in my freshman year. At first, it was difficult for me because I did not understand much English; therefore, when I took my first STAR test, I got a low reading level and I felt disappointed and dumb. The first time I took an AR I failed with a 60%, I was afraid that I would not meet my deadline and it would affect my grade. But somehow Leilehua’s AR system got me into reading culture. With the time I started to improve, getting a higher score, and reading level. Although it sometimes forces me to choose books I do not enjoy reading and puts pressure on me that it could affect my grade. However, AR system motivated me to read, but it is not preparing me for the future. AR should help students be prepared for the after high school life, but it is not completely doing its job. Leilehua should modify AR in order to prepare students to transition to the hallway of life and adulthood.…

The main purpose for “Why Good English Is Good for You” by John Simon is to inform people about how informal and how bad English people have been using these past years. Also to inform them about how the language has evolved to what it is today. He wants to aware everyone about this so that it can change and so everyone uses “Standard English”. The audience was anyone that spoke a language but his main audience was anyone who spoke English. The reason this applies to anyone is because language can change and can be created into new thing and new meanings. So the audience can be anyone because slang can happen in any…
