The courage to have faith in yourself
life is like riding a bicycle. When I learned to ride a bike, I started off with training wheels, and then as I grew up, I learned to ride the bike without the training wheels, sometimes I fell because I needed to accustom myself with only two wheels. But, finally I learned how to balance myself with two wheels. Riding the bicycle best explains how life has given me the strength, to overcome the challenges that life faces me in an everyday basis.

Being the oldest sibling in the family has not been easy. I’ve always believed that anything is possible in life, if we just believe in ourselves. I strongly believe this because my experiences make me learn how to become a successful person. I’ve learned this through my experience in high school.

When I entered high school, life became a struggle. Like any ordinary teenager, I had to confront the peer pressure that surrounded me and at the same time focused on school to obtain a good GPA. The biggest struggle I had to overpass was not letting my friends influence my behavior. This was hard because if I didn’t do what my friends wanted me to do, then I wasn’t cool enough to hang around with them. Having to give up school to hang out with my friends wasn’t exactly how I planned high school to be. Therefore, it dreaded me to know that I wasn’t going to have friends because I wanted to do well in school and breaking my parents heart by converting myself into a bad girl, was not something that my parents deserved after everything they have provided in life for me.

I remember going home and not regretting the time I spent talking to my mother about the issues that were going on in school. That day she helped me find my identity. The advice that I got from her and that will always be in my heart is when she said to be yourself and not another person that you are not. Being another person will only make you weak and there are greater things in a person’s personality than trying to fit in. These words went deep into my soul that it gave me the courage to stand up for myself and not let others affect me, but it even helped me into doing very well in school to make my parents and myself proud of my accomplishments.

Life is not easy. The experiences of peer pressure with my friends made me realize that I needed to stand up for myself and not let it drag to the ground. Just like the time where I had to accustom myself with riding a bike with two wheels. There are going to be times where life is going to seem unfair but there is always a way out to your struggles. The secret into confronting your problems is by looking deep down into your soul and do what you want to do. All it takes is the courage to have faith in yourself. This I believe.

At a young age, I waited on the benches for my mother to retrieve me from carpool. I observed my peers laughing together as they walked towards the gym for after-school sports. My mother, who soon arrived to find her kindergarten son sitting in solitude, scheduled numerous parent-teacher conferences. She would share her concerns while my teachers assured her that my "individuality" was what attracted friends to me. I had been a leader rather than a follower regardless of the opinion of others, and, to this day, that has remained static. I have evolved from that careless kindergarten leader, to an aspiring college graduate.…

High school was my time to stop fooling around. The first day of high school, I awoke to the aroma of coffee brewing on the stove. As I get ready to head out my sister approached me, and told me “Education is the key that opens the door many possibilities you can be and do in your near future” I was so nervous the sweat started dripping from my palms, and I suddenly felt 15 degrees hotter. I was nervous, I knew this is the time to get serious. Immediately a thought came across “ how well I do these four years can affect my entire life”. At first high school might look like a time to have fun and have no worries, which was my initial thought. Later on you start to realize that you need work hard. I thought “How would my future look? I was the kind of guy who always strove in order to get the highest grades but yet hadn’t decided what to do in the future. I wasn’t worried, I knew someday I would find something in what I was good at. I got to live with that thought for some time until I got to attend middle school, where I stopped worrying about my grades and managed only to pass the subjects. I spent most of my time sleeping due to the frustration of not knowing what to do in the future. Most of my middle school experience was tasteless. I hadn’t friends at all, and teachers used to discourage their students about their future. “You're not going to college, you’ll not be able to do it because you’re poor” used to say, Mrs. Vazquez, the math teacher who instead of giving her class, talked on how much his son had accomplished in college and how we would not be able to attend. That was about to change.…

I can remember all the way back to when I was a young child in elementary. I didn’t think much about the kids around me or how they lived and I can honestly say that very few kids stick out from those years maybe because it seemed to me at the time that we were all pretty much the same except for our physical appearances. What I can remember about the kids in junior high school was the need to fit in and be liked at all costs. Making fashion statements were much more important than answering the question about the meaning of life. High school though became a stepping stone into the complex and dynamic reality of the world around me that I had never investigated nor even identified. Beginning with my freshman year I encountered many more students than I ever thought I would. I started to notice quite quickly that the school population was extremely diverse and segmented. Groups were everywhere; jocks, nerds, gothic kids, trouble makers, and of course the ever present popular kids. This was the first time I could see with my own eyes the fact that we were actually quite different from each other. Kids that I had befriended in junior high slowing began to change and pull away from me for reasons that were not understandable to me at the time. In actuality, not only were they going through changes but I was going through them as well. My taste in clothes, music, sports, and my views on certain topics began to expand and diversify. Yet I started to realize that in doing so meant leaving my old friends behind and meeting new ones. My family had always been a cornerstone in my life who established my belief system as far as religion and values and therefore the perspective on the young life I had led up until that point. That upbringing enabled me to be able to compare and contrast the beliefs and ideas of others with my own and so the journey into the world of high school led me to come face to face with that very opportunity. One example which stands out in my mind…

I still can remember when me and my mother and brother was in the principle office where we was going to my a choice that would effects our lives forever. During our adolescent stage, many of us struggle to adhere to our parent rules and regulations, especially when it pertains to selecting friends who will have our best interest at heart. At least for me, during my teenage period, I thought if another teenage was kind to me, then she was automatically my friend. Failing to listen my parents assessment of some of those females, caused me to suffer unnecessary heartaches and embarrassments. Because I had trouble listening, as well as refusing to listen to suggestions and/or demands made by my parents to dissolve certain friendships, only created uncomfortable and hostile environments between schoolmates who I thought were my friends, but who my parents warns me against. I believe it is fair to say that if I had followed the advice given to me by my parents, I would have had a happier junior high friend relationship experience.…

When I was a teenager, I would sneak out of the house, go to outrageous parties, drink, talk back, skip school, fight, and just plain cause havoc around the city. I was called a bad influence to my step sister, who was two years younger then I. The one thing I did have going for me was my personality. In my senior year of high school, I was chosen to represent the Class Act feature in the county newspaper, the Jackson Citizen Patriot. It talked about how good of a student I was in a couple of brief sentences. I attended an alternative school that a lot of people in the city would look down on because they thought my school was full of rejects. So, the fifteen minutes of fame didn’t make a difference to me, until one day my mom was introducing me to one of her colleagues. She talked about how proud she was about the article and how good of a girl I was. Watching those words come out of her mouth surprised me. It made me open my eyes and realize that I wasn’t a bad kid. I may have made some irresponsible decisions, but I never got into gangs, got into trouble with the police, or did drugs. I found myself liking school more, graduating on time, on the honor roll, and was a speaker at graduation.…

For the first thirteen years of my life I lived by the idea that school wasn’t my thing. When I wasn’t doing well in a subject I would give up and say “I’m just not smart enough”. And since I thought nothing mattered before high school anyhow, I didn’t try very hard. But the reality was I really wanted to get good grades. My older sister and brother, Jackie and Tim, had always done very well in school. I admired that and I wanted to do well also. I wanted to become a good student.…
