The first really funny clown, you know with the makeup and the frilled collar and big shoes, was Joseph Grimaldi. He entertained the people of london in the 19th century but he had a dark side, stating “ I am Grim-all-day”. Charles Dickens wrote Grimaldi's memoirs, which was a tale of abuse, addiction, and agony. In Dickens words it was “absolutely distasteful”. In the section “Red Clowns” from the book The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros illustrates how being chosen is not as innocent as society makes it seem when the character Esperanza gets raped. While Esperanza and her friend Sally are at a carnival, Sally is chosen by a big boy and leaves with him (99). The outside was white with bricks showing through suggesting the building had probably been there some time. The lobby was several shades of brown except an out of place brightly multicolored cabinet that was in the corner. I was reminded of old books and newspapers as the lobby seemed to be made out of dust in the best way possible and it smelled like warm cinnamon. A sign on the wall offered apartments and hotel rooms. Despite the wooden vacancy sign hung outside, no one came out to greet us in the fifteen or so minutes we waited. We eventually called it and took off down the road. As we walked farther down Wright street and tried to avoid the small amounts of traffic we came across a few abandoned buildings, a photographer’s dream. Cracks and crevasses ran up and down the walls and vines crept up the sides of the buildings, wound their way through the cracks and and bursting through the windows that had been boarded up with wood that had begun to rot. My curiosity was peaked and it took a lot of self control to not find a way in to further explore the buildings but through the remaining dirty windows I could see a lot of old wood and what looked like trash on the floor. The building on the end was especially peculiar for it had the remnants of some poster that had been hung there once upon a time but now all that’s left are some eyes. They seemed to watch you wherever you went and they reminded me of the eyes of Doctor…

As a student on the Criminology and Criminal Justice Foundation Degree, this report has been conducted for the use of the School of Law, Justice and Community Studies Department to analyze the emergence and effects of the ‘Stranger Danger’ campaign. Criminal behaviour has predominantly been associated with random acts of deviancy perpetrated by strangers; portrayed to the public through the media’s eyes and further instilled into primary school children during safety week. Children are taught to identify any member of the public whom they are not associated with, as a threat; and are further provided with safety measures such as how to avoid unsafe situations and abate strangers when approached by them, noting events and car registration plates, alongside reporting detailed accounts of the occurrence. Furthermore, parents are provided with pamphlets on the key “how to’s” in teaching their child about stranger danger. However, nor the school curriculum or the parents are encouraged to address the issues of safety within the home, or risks of harm among acquaintances; how to identify these and report them. The stranger danger pandemic created by the media has blind-sighted the more common threats that lies within the family unit, preventing sufferers to report the abuse and those around the victimization, to acknowledge the signs and intervene. This report aims to provide awareness towards the common risks of harm faced through factors such as domestic violence and child abuse; erasing the fear of strangers which has been instilled into the public through the moral panic of ‘stranger danger’. The key question asked here is “is ‘stranger danger’ the real threat?”; in order to answer this successfully, there shall be an insight on the public’s perception of stranger danger through a series of questions, alongside a survey which shall require participants to answer their views on what they believe the statistics of crime are; and upon acknowledging the…

Freddy Krueger, cyber bullies, and your primary care physician all have one glaring commonality- and this the fact that they all disguise themselves behind masks. In the late 1930s and early 1940s the world was shaken by the persecution that radiated from Nazi Germany. It was this persecution that ignited global warfare in what is now referred to as World War II. The strict governmental enforcement of unification amongst soldiers was seen across the boards as all soldiers wore matching uniforms and had similarly matching haircuts. For many civilians at the time, questions of morality surrounding the justification of wartime murder troubled them. It was shortly after this…

Ogden Marsh, Iowa was once the friendliest place on Earth. Until one day the “American Dream” changed into the “American Disaster” within a blink of an eye. The American scientific horror film, “The Crazies”, portrayed this disastrous apocalyptic event. The apocalypse is any universal or widespread destruction or disaster. Every apocalyptic event contains narrative elements which can be profoundly disruptive, chaotic, and uncontrollable. I believe the motion picture, “The Crazies” consist of these narrative elements.…
